Nail cutting!

ahhhhh!
Leo's nails are soooooooo sharp!
we tried to cut them with dad holding him down and me cutting but he started crying and found a way to wriggle free. at the moment i have done 1 paw because he is asleep on my knee!

how do i cut them while he is awake?!

he got all angry and started ignoring me after the dreaded session, i had to bribe him with ham!

Re: Nail cutting!

You shouldn't pin him down to cut them, as he'll then associate the nail clipping with bad things and it'll only get more difficult. Start by getting him used to having his paws handled and his nails extended. Do this while he's asleep and awake, and if you have to, give him a treat whenever you do it so that he gets to a point where he's looking forward to it. Then just add the nail clippers into the situation. If you can do it by yourself, then do so, and treat after every nail is clipped. i did this with Millie and I was able to turn her onto her back the other day and clip away while she just lay there and purred. We had a few wriggles towards the end, but she's not even 6 months old yet, so that's Ok as her concentration span isn't very long.

Hi Ingrid,

can be a challenge, this might help, else am sure the vet nurse wouldn't mind doing it for you if Leo is due to go in?

Re: Nail cutting!

I trim our cats claws every three weeks as part of their grooming sessions, I wouldn't pin him down though, if he doesn't like it just maybe keep going back to him and doing one claw at a time throughout the day, talk calm and he will eventually trust that you wont hurt him.
Some of mine feel more relaxed laid on their backs while I trim them, others prefer to stand while I lift one paw at a time, Paris is the hardest one as I am left handed and for some reason she prefers me to trim her left paw with my right hand...I have got quite good at that too.lol.
Maybe you could try to trim your cats claws while he is sleeping on your lap.
Gently press their paws to make their claws retract , not too hard you don't want to damage their delicate paws, and gently cut the tip, be careful not to cut too low as they will bleed and be painful.
Good luck it will get easier. Failing that ask your vet to show you how.

Re: Nail cutting!

I started doing ours today for the first time - have 1 paw done - only 7 to go....

My two have a habbit of curling up with me if I use the laptop while lying on the couch in the computer room (yes we have a dedicated room for computers - we need to with how many we have), so I waited til then to start. I had to stop when Odin decided he'd be more comfortable lying on Oslo's head - blocking access to his paws.

Will try again later when I can access paws unhindered and they are relaxed and sleepy.
walkingcarpets likes this.

Re: Nail cutting!

We are lucky that Cookie does not mind getting her nails clipped at all. We do it when she is sleepy - at around 7 or 8pm on the night she needs it done - and spend 5 minutes holding her paws, extending her nails and making sure she is fine with that. She likes to watch now and will raise her paw once she knows that the other paw is finished!! She purrs throughout too

We just left the clippers on the bed at first and then introduced them while she was asleep aand then once when she was sitting on my lap.

Re: Nail cutting!

I do Ari's during her afternoon nap on the chair by window. Light is great, I get great stability by sitting on the floor, and I give her some chin rubs to distract her. Sometimes I can get a full paw before she's fully awake, sometimes It takes me a few days to have one done. Anyway, even a little bit now and then makes a big difference on pain level when she attacks me with those knives
The important thing is to make it a habit. During cuddling time, hold his paw kindly, spread the fingers and feel his nails to make him used to the feeling.
