Why does my cat now poo everywhere?

Can anybody help!!! I have a male Persian, now 12 years old, even from a kitten he would occasionally go to toilet outside the cat lit but i would notice it always had a fresh poo in there whenever he did so i put it down to this. Of late he has taken to defecating in the bathroom, kitchen and even more strangely on carpet in my room, this is now daily! If anyone out there has also experienced this can you please give us some advice on what it is we're doing or not doing that's causing him to do this. Please help, getting desperate

any changes in the house? or have you seen new cats in garden?
no experience myself - read through the threads in behaviour section
for now maybe, extra trays in his regular poo spots & feliway?

Re: Why does my cat now poo everywhere?

Sometimes inappropriate defecation like this can be due to intestinal inflammaton/constipation so what are stools like? The cat associated pain and discomfort with the litter tray and soils elsewhere as a result. So a vet visit to rule this out.

Of course in a longterm case like this it may just be down a habit-you need to remove all traces of soiling, otherwise he will return to the areas-Urine-off or Simple Solutions are both good. I also wonder if a litter chance might help to resolve things as some cats positively dislike some brands.

I just wanted to say that any sudden change in toilet behaviour (such as this) can be a health problem. First call is vets to rule anything out. Keep us updated

Re: Why does my cat now poo everywhere?

Thanks for everyone's advice, we have just bought a new male kitten as our other female cat passed away not so long ago and it was just an attempt to motivate them really since they seemed so depressed afterwards. They seem ok together though, the old boy tolerates the kitten more than anything but he has always since a kitten had the occasional accident outside the cat lit, it's only recently that it's become an every day thing. He has always acted quit strange around a cat lit though, he races from it as soon as he's done, doesn't cover it or wipe his paws, he never has. Now the kitten goes in after him and tries to bury it for him like our female cat who just passed away. He's at that age though where your just grateful he's still about so i don't really have the heart to lock him in a room with cat lit and food so i'm just going to try the spray's and new cat lit and boxes. If all else fails i'll still love him, **** and all

Re: Why does my cat now poo everywhere?

It could be an attempt to "comfort" himself with his "scent" (sadly not too fragrant!) if he has not long lost a long term companion and then having to adjust to a new kit on the block so to speak - he is probably all at sea. Perhaps get a Feliway plugin or two for a month or two, add a new litter tray with some different litter and see how it goes.

Good luck. Be nice to see a photo.
