Age for a collar

Hi, I don't mean for this to be a pros and cons of collars thread but I just wanted to ask. What age would you say a cat can wear a collar from? Of course they have to be the right weight to be able to activate the breakaway system but is there a recommended age in your experience?

I put a collar on mine when we picked her up at 8 weeks old.

Re: Age for a collar

I think it really depends on the breed of kitten and his body weight hun.

If Thomas is a decent weight, then you should be ok with a breakaway one. It might be worth looking to see if they do kitten ones that are lighter with a smaller buckle on that doesn't require so much 'pull' against it.

I don't know if they do but it's worth looking for.

Re: Age for a collar

I think if you are sure that you will want your cat to wear a collar then it makes sense to get it used to one as soon a possible. It is possible to get collars which are made of a woven elastic material which can be used on small cats and kittens....indeed they are SO elastic that they don't often stay on for long! I start off putting the collar on for short periods of time and building it up, taking the collar off when the kitten is left unattended for the first few weeks.

I've found a lightweight kitten breakaway one. Still not 100% sure on one but I agree with the points you've made before on collars so that's why I'm considering it

Re: Age for a collar

We thought about one but as my BSH's are indoors, we decided not to plus my Breeder told us it wasn't wise. However I would say from 6months +

Re: Age for a collar

Whatever age YOU think is right?
So long as you check it daily to make sure it's secure but not strangling the cat then you'll be fine.

Never understand people who are like "ohh, it's bad when they are kittens because kittens grow duh". I agree, kittens grow, but not enough overnight that they will end up being strangled. Seriously, the un-educated simple things people are adamant they are right in amazes me these days.

The only refererrence to age I can see is that small kittens do not have enough weight to release the "snap off" collars which makes them dangerous. If the majority give the same answer to a question then perhaps consideration should be given to that answer,no one is saying they are right and any one disagreeing is wrong, just that it is their opinion.
