Post Op - Is this normal?

As some of you know Rosso was neutered yesterday, the op was more complicated than usual as he had an undescended testicle so they had to open him up to search for it.... after a very worrying wait I got the phone call to say all is well and to come and collect him.. well I was expecting a drowsy, sleepy kitten but certainly didn't expect this mad, scary, hyper, wide-eyed MANIAC that was returned to me, he was an absolute lunatic, charging around the flat, attacking my other cat Mika, lunging at me with claws fully out

This lasted the whole evening, I kept hoping it would wear off and he start to calm down but no, Mika had to take refuge on top of the kitchen cabinets just to get away from him!!!! I was supposed to put an E-Collar on him to stop him licking but I was afraid that in the mood he was in he would have my arm off...

Today he is calmer and almost back to normal, I still haven't attempted to put the collar on but am keeping a very close eye on him to make sure he doesn't go near his stitches but I was just wondering if this is a normal reaction? Was it a reaction to the anesthetic do you think? Reaction to pain? Feeling uncomfortable?...... or just plain pissed off for loosing his precious jewels?

Re: Post Op - Is this normal?

I think it was the anaesthetic I have had 3 cats done in the last 4 years and all of them you would not have thought they had had an operation Max was hyper last week Tiga was just plain loving and Mikki kept running around like a luney it can take cats in different ways years ago when I had my cats done they used to be sleepy for a couple of days I think they use a better lighter anaesthetic now if he is still hyper just give the vet a call and I am sure he/she will put your mind at rest

Yep, both of mine were like that after their ops, frustrating because the vet tells you to keep them quiet - no chance!!

Re: Post Op - Is this normal?

Scamp came back once and was wide eyed and terrified, obviously he was disorientated as well, I have never seen him like this before and it wasn't the first time he had anaesthetic, he was fine after a few hours but I kept a close eye on him in case he hurt himself Hope Rosso has come back down to earth and recovering well

Re: Post Op - Is this normal?

I've just done a Google search and found this 'The anesthesia may cause hallucinogenic affects and cause the cat to over-react to normal stimulation or become aggressive'

I'll mention it to the vets tomorrow when we go for our post-op check up but he does seem to be back to normal now, I wish they had warned me tho' It was like they had swapped him for some wild, feral.. It freaked me out a bit

Re: Post Op - Is this normal?

I think it's quite common, they fight the anaesthetic effect in their bodies and go completely hyper, but they do crash eventually but I would mention it to the vet when you take him for the check up.

Re: Post Op - Is this normal?

Cats, like humans, react to anaesthetics differently. Sooty used to become obsessed with places, so he would become obsessed with sitting in one spot and would not move for hours on end. Not lying down or sleeping or even resting, he just sat there. He was perfectly happy, as he would purr and talk to you when you walked up to him, and if you picked him up and moved him we would go right back to his spot. The spot was a different one each time
I got Storm after he was neutered and he hasn't had to have anything fixed yet, as he is a strong healthy boy so don't know what he is like!
Benji was quite woozy and feeling sorry for himself for a good few hours but then decided 10pm -4am was a fantastic time to play naughty instead!
