Re: Kitten covering own food!

Ki sometimes does this. I vary her wet food flavors everyday and there's one flavor she's not a big fan of. She will eat it, but she usually tries to bury it first, then ignores it for a while, and finally will deign to eat it when we go to bed.

But today, hubby let the turkey grease catch fire in the rotisserie -- just enough to smoke a little -- and she ran over and covered her food with the mat and then stood there, guarding it. It was kind of funny. She doesn't react that way to candle smoke.

Re: Kitten covering own food!

My kitten always tries to cover up her wet food. She has newspaper under it in her pen and it all ends up torn . Quite often there is a toy mouse in the food bowl too. I used to have another cat that would try and cover it up by scraping at the kitchen floor.

Re: Kitten covering own food!

Of my three only Bertie does this. He will come back over to his food once they have all eaten as much as they want at first sitting and then scratch at the bowls and mat around the food. And the water fountain and the dry food containers and ...

When we put wet food down, Treacle often doesn't eat it immediately, or only has a few bites, so we often cover it with a tissue and leave it for a while to see if he will want any more.

Now however, he has taken to covering it over himself!! All we have to do is leave a clean piece of tissue down and he will drag it over the food!!!

I suppose they have to cover it in the wild, although obviously not with tissue...
we have lids from Germany for our matching dishes, are well handy

Re: Kitten covering own food!

We have 3 cats and their dishes are on a table
One of them,Dougal, aged 14,has always covered his food up

If ANYTHING is left on the table he will use it to cover his dish

The funny thing is that he NEVER covers what he does in his litter tray-the other 2 cats have to do that for him!!!!

Still he was named after the Dougal from "Father Ted"
so that might explain it
