Prerequisites to have a happy cat

Hey guys,

I was just wondering what requirements one has to meet to own a happy, healthy cat.

Given that the cat gets all the medical attention it requires, what else do you need?

How large has a flat have to be? My appartement only has 60mē and I couldn't spare an entire room for the cat alone, so it would have to share my living room.

Can cats be happy without a garden? I live in the 3rd level of a small house and only have a little balcony, I wouldn't want the cat to fall down from there.

Is it a problem that I'm a student and usually study from 8 to 3?
Can the cat occupy itself in these times, if it has enough toys to play with?

I'm aware of cats being a long-term-commitment and getting attached to places, but will it mind terribly should I move to a different place?

If I'm forgetting anything, let me know

Re: Prerequisites to have a happy cat

Hi, I'm no expert but just to offer my thoughts:

Cats are perfectly fine being indoor only. Many people do not let their cats out at all with today's busy roads.
You can get a cat guard on balcony to prevent them falling out.
Space wise I think you'd be ok - how about seeing if there are any poor cats in rescue centres who need an indoor home. Often older cats do not want to go outside anyway. Maybe a cat with hearing problems who needs a home indoors. Have a look in your local rescue centres or on the adoption section here. Often transport can be arranged if they are far away.
Often older cats do not need as much entertaining so should be fine for those hours you are out.
As long as you are not moving too often puss will be fine.
I hope this helps and I'm sure the more experienced will be along soon to offer more.
