Even if she admitted on the day that she had made a mistake and over committed I could have found someone to check on them...we all make mistakes from time to time and I could have accepted that...

Sigh I will sleep on it but already know I am going away to see family for a few days at new year and just wouldn't feel ok with her so soon...maybe sometime in the future...

I would also find it hard to trust her again! Is there anyone else you could trust so you wouldnt even have to consider using her again??

Oh dear, I thought that was what you'd say
To be honest, and this is just me - I'm not a very forgiving person.. I don't think I could trust someone after doing that. Admittedly, she's probably feeling like a Class A twonk right now..

Re: Would you do the same?

If she agreed to cat-sit for you then she should have lived up to her agreement and looked after your kitties every single day without fail. If that was me, I would have gone TWICE a day. So I can 100% see why you're mad. Maybe you should let her explain herself and show her that you're not happy with her - if she's a good enough person then she will apologise and do anything to make it up to you.

Re: Would you do the same?

If she knew she would be getting back late from the wedding, she should at least have visited them as late as possible the day before and given them extra food and water to survive a couple of extra hours.

If I stay away for 2 days (1 night away from home), I don't even have a cat sitter, I just give them plenty of food, clean the litter trays and clean and fill up the water fountain before I leave, and they will be fine till I return. So if she had seen to them properly before going to the wedding, they should not have gone hungry at all.

She obviously isn't thinking or planning ahead, but playing it by ear, which is something you cannot do if you are responsible for someone else's pets (or your own, for that matter).

Re: Would you do the same?

Thanks everyone

I feel less awful now I'm sure she is upset but it was a silly thing to do (I thought she was on way home from party rather than on way to work)

The thing is I feel vulnerable living alone and giving essentially a stranger my keys and access to my home. It's not just about the cats...but don't tell them that

I know one other agency that was recommended so will try them and see how it goes. But will get my friends to check in without telling the sitter just to be safe/spy the problem with new year is friends are all coming and going so it's easier to book a sitter

Thanks for the advice/thoughts

Re: Would you do the same?

I am a voluntary cat sitter for a cat rescue organisation that also runs a holiday service for its members.
There are times when my appointments clash with the cat sitting, but if I have to stay away overnight, I will ALWAYS go to them right before I leave and on my way home. If necessary I will arrive later at the appointment or leave early.

If I have to defend myself for not staying from beginning to end, I say I am caring for a diabetic cat, or a cat with renal problems, that needs its medication on time. It always works....

If I really have to skip a day, I tell the owners beforehand, so they can decide either to let me feed them for 2 days at once, or to call in someone else for that one day.
