But after a check-up by the vet, she says he has Harvest Mites! They are almost microscopic, and eat skin cells, not blood - hence the frontline not working. She also says that there is no effective way of getting rid of them and that they will clear up as the weather gets colder. It seems the little buggers are resistant to all known pesticides and the ones that do work somewhat are harmfull to the cat. So we're hoping for an early frost now

The vet says do you live near open fields where the mites like to live:

Err, that's a yes then.

Anyone else had any experience with them?

Must admit as far as I knew it was only the Larvae stage of the harvest mite that caused the problem, and they tended to fall off the animal after a few days. I believe if Ive remembered correctly they are a member of the spider family. Unless of course, the mites have set up an allergic reaction, an thats why he is still itching.

Re: Anyone heard of Harvest Mites ?

Ouch - poor Dexter if his tail is like that under his fur
I've heard of them but have never seen a case. Hope you find a treatment that works for him soon
