Yawning is one way of communicating the information 'I am relaxed'
Try this...when cat is in a position that it can see your face, glance over to it not quite making eye contact.....yawn a couple of times and even smack your lips/tongue while sliding your gaze further away from the cat. It will mimic you, either yawning in return or maybe just closing it's eyes, or settling down to snooze.
It's actually a really good way of calming a slightly anxious cat.

Ooh Thank you Paddypaws! I will give that a go next time he's in the room. We have blinking contests as I heard that is a very friendly thing to do and it always makes me chuckle because it will go on for a good 20mins before he gets bored and has a snooze
