Question Rosemary Extract?

Hi,

I got some raw chicken breasts out of the freezer to defrost (bought them frozen) just looked at the label and they have rosemary extract in them

Does anyone know if it's poisonous to cats?

Seb had dire rear yesterday and again this morning, I think it's due to him teething, did call the vet this afternoon and they said kittens do get dire rear when teething and see how he goes for a couple more days. He's fine in himself, still running around like a lunatic.

So been feeding him on boiled chicken (not with rosemary extract) yesterday and today. No poo's since this morning, but will continue with the chicken.

If it's not poisonous, I'm not sure if it's a good idea to feed it to him if he has a runny bottom???

Any advice appreciated. Xx

Re: Rosemary Extract?

I know the essential oil can be dangerous, but essentail oil of pretty much anything, undiluted, can be dangerous. I've cooked rosemary in things for the dogs because it's good for digestion or something, and I know the cats have eaten some and been fine.

Now, someone might come along and say it gets stored in the liver and so is bad, but so far as I know and have experienced, mine have been fine with a little bit in their food.

Oh, but I have read that rosemary is supposed to repell cats, much like citrus. Mine don't mind either . I tried to protect my herb box by planting rosemary on the outside, and some orange mint, but they paid no attention and plowed right through and dug up all sorts of things I didn't want them to.

Thanks. I knew about the essential oils and did a google search on the extract and get different opinions

My mums cat used to sleep under the rosemary bush

Re: Rosemary Extract?

The herb is relatively safe, I would be more worried about any other ingredients, especially sodium content, raw feeders rule of thumb: sodium should be less than 100mg per 100g.

Thanks. The sodium is 0.30g per 100mg.

So much for natural deterrents, huh? I'm thinking the only way to keep an herb garden inside is to hang it from the ceiling where they can't leap on it.

No doubt. I can imagine them standing on each other's shoulders, and throwing down leaf bits, then whole plants.... Henry's even managed to kill a cactus!
