Cat Flu ?????

Has anyones cat had Cat Flu and did you need treatment or does it run it's course like the human cold etc.
My cat has become unwell. She has gone off her food over the last few days (though I have managed to get her to eat some tuna tonight). She is very lethargic ...will go out for 10 mins to an hour and then come back in and sleep the rest of the day. She appears to be coughing and sneezing.
I have never seen this before ....do I need to take her to the vets or let or sleep it off and recover on her own ????

Re: Cat Flu ?????

I would ring the vet first thing, cats can die from cat flu! Best not to take her into a crowded waiting room though as it could spread to other cats.

vets for sure - tomorrow!
there are secondary infections etc...not worth the risk of not having her seen

how old? and is she up to date with jabs?

She needs to go to the vets.It is not something she will "shake off"and will need veterinary help. Are you certain it is cat flu?not that it matters if she is not eating that ,in its self is not good.

Re: Cat Flu ?????

Thank folks ... I'm not sure it is cat flu, but she keeps sneezing and has had a wet nose and only picking at her food for a couple of days.
She is 4 years old but came to us as a stray 12 months ago. She is up to date with her vaccinations but I have just received a reminder that her booster is due, though I am not sure to let her have it while she is unwell !

The vet wont ,I hope, give her the booster unless she is healthy, but let him be the judge tomorrow, and please let us know how she gets on.

Re: Cat Flu ????? NO - Abcess had to be drained!

Well I'm so glad I made an appointment to take her to the vets when I got home from work. When I finished work I dash straight in put her in her carrier and dashed back to the vets before they closed. I was shocked what we then found. I had picked her up under her tummy and bottom to put her in the carrier, but when the vet went to get her out he went to lift her by the scruff of the neck but stopped !!!!!! He tipped the carrier and slid her out and we could see that she had a huge abcess swelling at the back of her neck under her collar about the size of a tennis ball !!!! (It's a good job her collar was elasticated and stretched over it)
Well the vet had to shave some fur and then lance the abcess which then poured out a thick yellow puss that looked like custard all over the bench which he then had to squeeze to get as much out as possible! She had an injection of antibiotics to cover her for 48 hours and then I have 5 days worth of tablets to continue the course.
The only problem we have now is that the wound is still open and planned to drain any remaining puss over the next couple of days until the antibiotics dry it up, and she keeps trying to clean it !!
Anyway at least she seams a bit brighter in her self and has just wolfed some of her Salmon so it must have made her feel a bit better. The vet didn't seem too concerned about her sneezing at the moment and the coughing may have been a bit if constriction due to the swelling so hopefully all will be well now !

My only concern now is that the vet thinks she must have been attacked by a dog or another cat, but I'm not sure where as she doesn't go far.
Anyway, she going to stay in for a few days untill healed !!!

Re: Cat Flu ?????

She doesn't need to go far to get in a fight. If another cat ventures into her garden, she may wel decide to defend it, or the other will try to claim it. And sometimes they even hurt each other when they are not even seriously fighting.

You were very lucky to get her to the vet before the abcess burst of its own accord, or the damage would have been far greater. Can't you give her a collar to stop her from reaching the wound, or will it be right over the wound?
Like this?
