Difference in behaviour post-op?

Hi all,

since Benji had the snip two weeks back, he has become more naughty and less cuddly He has never been an overly cuddly kitty but we did have a daily (nightly rather) cuddle where he would come for huge snugs and purrs.
Since he had the snip, I've only been allowed two such sessions!

He has also become so very very naughty it's unbelieveable. Over the past few days he, and he alone, has done the following;

- Pulled down a basket off my top shelf with lots of little bits and pieces in it, which means they ended up everywhere in the living room
- Knocked all of the books of my middle shelf one by one whilst looking at me deliberately
- Scratched at a bit of loose plastering and ripped up a small patch meaning I now have to pay to get it replastered (or can hopefully get it done out of sympathy from a friend who can do that type of work for free)
- Refused point blank to et his raw food this morning meaning I had to chuck it out (by the time Storm was hungry again it had gone off)
- Keeps nicking tea towels that are drying off the radiators and dragging them across the floor
- Broken my venetian blind

and the list goes on....

I haven't changed anything about his routine, he still gets plenty of play time etc and him and Storm are playing more than ever.

Storm on the other hand has been a delight - think he misses his daddy a lot so now comes to me more for snugs. Spent two hours asleep on the sofa earlier with him curled up by my chest, was very lovely

Has anybody had any experience with changes in behaviour after the snip? I thought he may become slightly calmer and more snuggy once he no longer has the hormones raging in his body (I know they are still there for a few more weeks) but he has gone and done the exact opposite!!

Ems x

Re: Difference in behaviour post-op?

Well I cant put it down to the snip as Bugs was done a couple of months (aged four months). But since he has hit the 6month age he has started to become naughty! Jumping on the kitchen counter is the main thing no matter how much I tell him no and put him on the floor (with a gentle push) He also climbed out of my bedroom window the other day and scared himself silly!! He has also stopped being picked up quite as much and decided to run away just as you bend down to pick him up as if it is a game.

What Im trying to say is maybe it is just a coincidence that he had the snip and then these behaviours have started maybe he is just going through the terrible twos sort of age for kittens like Bugs!?

Re: Difference in behaviour post-op?

Thing is Benji was quite a cheeky chap beforehand, but it's like he is so out of control much like a teenager! He is 8 months old though, and like with you his cheeky chappiness kicked in at around 5-6 months but I can see a clear difference since the snip. He even hooks my feet with his claws under theduvet if I don't wake up promptly when he asks me to (i.e. jumping all over me).

I love him dearly but I do find myself getting frustrated on occasion as now that my boyfriend has left me, I've got a substitute to constantly pick up after!! Although I always melt when he sleeps on the back of he sofa, he's the cutest bubby ever when he is sleeping

Re: Difference in behaviour post-op?

Is it possible he is missing your ex hun?

This all seems to have happened pretty much about the same time. Cats are so like children and they do miss their slaves. Maybe he doesn;t know how best to deal with his upset. Just like a child wouldn't.

Kids & cats are not so dis-similar really.....

haha, that thing they do when they look at you with the cute face while being extremely and knowingly naughty, like they are daring you to be annoyed!

Sounds like you've got your hands full there. Hope it's a phase which passes soon. Wonder how Herbie will be when he gets 'done'....he's total perfection atm but could all change...!

I was actually going to ask the same thing ...... maybe they are both showing you they are missing him, but in different ways. I know it's not quite the same, but when my OH had to go away for a few days, Molly wanted nothing to do with me She had a right grump on!!

Re: Difference in behaviour post-op?

Poppy was neutered about a week ago and I've noticed that she's not purring as much, but that's the ony difference so far.

My Mom mentioned (when we were talking about our respective cats) that she noticed some personality changes in her cats after they were neutered.

Re: Difference in behaviour post-op?

I hope for your sake this is them missing your ex and they get over it in time. Of course, I mean that Storm stays extra snuggly and that Benji settles down again .

If it makes you feel any better you are not alone . Bloo has become more naughty over time, although it didn't start with his snip and does a few of the same things as Benji. He looks right at me while he is doing it so I know it is deliberate. Freckle very rarely does anything naughty, with the worse being stealing human food.

I get quite cranky with Bloo and have resorted to locking (he opens doors) myself in another room on occasion. When I'm feeling particularly fed up I vacuum and drive it towards him
