kitten being naughty

my button is now roughly 14 to 15wks old. after he had all his injections i started letting him go in the garden with harry and he loved it. i would love him to just stay in the garden and never wonder. however last week i lost him out there and asked harry to tell me where he was. i have a big garden. harry went straight to the huge willow tree at the bottom of the garden.
well button had gone up there, was crying and wouldnt come down the big trunk, but kept going onto the smaller branches. he slipped and was hanging on by his front paws then dropped to the ground about 20ft. i nearly had a heart attack.
so i thought he wont go out for a few days and he wont do that again.
he escaped when i opened the door a couple of days ago and did the same and we had to eventually had to get a ladder out to him.
i want to keep him in at least until ive got him chipped and neutured and some insurance on him, but hes so dying to go out. how on earth do people keep cats indoors.

Re: kitten being naughty

hes not being naughty... hes being a kitten.

we keep our cats indoors by not having doors open when they are about...

also we have a large pen attached to the kitchen wall so we can just open a window for the cats to get fresh air, sit and watch the birds, and just generally chill out.

Re: kitten being naughty

Hi Michelle,

Welcome to prision life It is hard to keep cats in, I have been lucky as in Libby my kitten has shown no interest at all in going out doors... nor would I let her in winter months with the nights closing in earlier.

It does become a way of life, I used to put signs on doors with my other cat loulou, to remind my husband.... and I still do it now as Loulou is only allowed out in the mornings and must come in around lunch time and that is it for the day... she has got into a routine now and is 5 yrs old....

IMO I don't let my cats out untill they are a year old.. this way they never seem to roam as much... most road accidents happen to kittens under the age of one...

As you have a boy, he will want to roam naturally...... and he has had a little taste now.. you may have your hands full and have a lot of worry to come... or you may be one of the lucky ones.....

If it were me in your shoes,,,, I'd keep the little monkey in untill he was over a year old and had his bits sorted..... get him a tree as he obviously likes to climb, that will keep him entertained.

good luck,

Re: kitten being naughty

I have had the same problem this week with my kitten who is the same age as yours, she decided to climb to the very top of a tree in our garden (about 20ft) she was too scared to get down so i had to climb the tree to get her down, i have just let her out again for the first time since and she ran for the tree but luckily just climbed about 4ft up the tree trunk and decided she didn't want to go any further so i'm hoping she has learnt her lesson!

I only let her out for 5 minutes or so with me and won't be letting her out of my sight until she's neutered.

I can't keep her in it just feels too mean, she loves going outside.
