Describing Simba

My DH is Italian, and although his English is excellent, thanks to 8 years in the UK before we moved down to Italy in 2005, he still doesn't always master the subtleties of English in quite the same way as a native speaker would. So consequently we have this interesting description of Simba. Simba's a bit of a busy-body and won't leave Misi, or anyone or anything else alone. I call him a "menace", perhaps a bit of an over-statement, but it's an expression my mum used to use, and you know what they say about turning into your own mother, especially where kids (read "cats") are concerned! Anyway, I heard DH saying Simba was "menacing". I said, no, that's too strong, he's a "menace". He asked me to explain the difference and I thought acting it out would be better than trying to explain it, so I crept up to him, Nosferatu-style, growling. "That's menacing", I said. Then I went on to poke and dab at him while prancing around him. "That's being a menace", I said. So now, what does he say about Simba? "He's being menacing". Gordon Bennett
