BSH - indoor only?

In your experience, are these indoor ONLY cats? Do they have any coomon sense to be allowed outdoor access if they so wish?

Re: BSH - indoor only?

I've seen a few roaming in my village (about 8?)

2 ended up roadkill, 1 killed by my neighbours tom and 2 stolen though 1 stolen one was recovered

Re: BSH - indoor only?

You will find that 99% of pedigree cats AREN'T suitable to go outside. 99.9% of proper pedigree breeders WON'T sell a kitten to an outdoor home. The way pedigrees tend to be breed for that lovely cuddly nature etc means that the 'wild' I can cope with life outside part of their nature is very lacking. So many pedigree breeds are completely trusting and will go with anyone so are very easy to steal and many ped that wander are stolen.

If you can't cat proof your garden and want your cat to go out - you need to go for a cross (but be aware of scams) or a moggy.

Re: BSH - indoor only?

I personally think, if you want an outdoor cat, go for a rescue - most rescues prefer to have their cats with outdoor access, whereas most breeders of pedigrees specify 'indoor only'.

And pedigrees do turn up in rescues - you may have to wait and keep checking to find your 'perfect for you' cat, but it will be worth the wait

Re: BSH - indoor only?

I wouldnt let Molly out but there is a huge black bsh that comes in my garden, but there is a risk that they get hurt/killed or even nicked by people.

I wouldnt want any of that for molly, plus what i paid for her, theres no-way shes leaving my sight

Although I would still be wary of letting crosses out too.
Two of mine are NFCxRagdolls - very trusting, very laid back, and I wont let them roam even when they are old enough.

There are so many stories at the moment of pedigrees (or crosses that look like pedigrees) being stolen, I wouldnt risk it, even if I was inclined to let them out.

Re: BSH - indoor only?

I think it will be best for me to stick to what I have done previously and rescue a moggy. Just this time i will need to spend more time making sure the cat is right for our family and vice versa. It was oh so simple when it was just me and I could give my house to any cat, nervous, scared etc. This time I need to find one chilled out mog

Re: BSH - indoor only?

Oscar is a BSH I never wanted him to go out but because we have a busy house I showed him outside cos I wanted him to know where he lived incase he ever got out! It was the biggest mistake I made, at first he didn't go out if the garden but more and more he decided to venture further!
He had no road sense what so ever and would lay in the middle of the road and I always feared he would be either stolen or run over! The latter happened in June my son run him over outside if our house he spent 2 weeks in intensive care with multiple fractures tI his lower and top jaw his soft palate at the bottom of his mouth was broken from back to front and his paw was temporarily parylised! I will never let him out alone again and would urge anyone with BSH or any cat really never to let em out alone! I learnt the hard way I know there will be some who say its cruel and that it won't happen to theirs, that they don't live near a main rd! Well neither did I! For a cat such as Oscar who loved the outdoors he has adjusted brilliantly to indoor life! He does have a run though now too
