vet bills

hi lucy is doing so much better on her meds and eating very good,my biggest worry is the vet bills and medication,we are on benefits and were we stay there are no pdsa practices which is really bad, recently though the pdsa gave me some help towards the bill which im very grateful for but this is just a one off,my worry is affording future vet bills and meds, lucy has to be on ongoing medication which is costing £42 lasting 2 months, which i bought online cheaper but with a prescription, the vet charged me £15 for this to last 3 months,im worried sick can anyone give me any advice were to get any help if possible,my last resort would have to be rehoming her or put down which i certainly dont want to do.

Re: vet bills

Sorry, this isn't meant to be nasty but why have you got two cats if you can't afford veterinary treatment? £15 is not alot of money for animal treatment, it can be hundreds at times.

Maybe you could ask your vet to match the prices online & pay by weekly installments.

The OP's cats are 11 & 12 yo - it is possible that the OP was NOT in financial difficulties at the time of obtaining them. Many people have had their lives turned on their heads over the last 2 years due to recessions and cut-backs.

The OP came on to ask for advice & suggestions - not to be judged.

Also, the £15 is just for the vet to write up the prescription - the OP still has to PAY for the medication when she buys it on-line.

Your final suggestion re weekly installments is what the OP was after, however, and would be worth looking into.

for your information i have only one cat now who is 14 years old,£15 i was charged for a 3 month repeat prescription as it was cheaper to buy meds online, the meds i went into debt to pay for were £42 which only lasts 2 months, the vet charges £47 every consultation when blood tests are done and they want to see her every 3 months, try finding the money for that when your on benefits, they allowed me to set up a standing order which started this month at £10 per month which they think is not enough, basically im looking long term and very worried about this,i already cancelled an appointment as i cant afford it and she is doing well,i have to say you are a bit cheeky arent you,my life has changed dramatically in the last 3 years,i am a full time carer to my husband who of no fault of his own developed heart failure, had a heart transplant was damaged after a very bad recovery and is on dialysis 3 times a week, its not out fault we are on benefits and my wee cat lucy is all i have left from 3 cats actually, dont judge a book by its cover i was only looking for advice and help i love my cat to bits....

Re: vet bills

Hey I'm sorry things are so difficult at the moment.

I'm guessing insurance won't cover any costs of the medication prescription etc? Are you able to get a loan of a family member or good friend? Are there any other vets around the area? Just wondering if it is possible to explain the situation to some of them and see if they can help? I wish I could think of something better but it is such a tricky situation. I know how tough it can be when money is so tight.

Re: vet bills

sorry to hear of your troubles, we are on a limited income so can imagine what a worry it is. Have you tried checking other vets prices? Where we live we have a chain of vets called 'value vets' they seem very good i have always been very pleased with their service especially when i had an emergency with Pud. Our vet only charges £17 for a consultation, £24 for vaccinations, £27 for castration. The most i've spent was £78 for a consultation, antibiotics & Advocate for 2 cats. Shopping around might just save you a few £'s and help ease your worry, i hope you find a solution x

Re: vet bills

Ask your vet if he will give you a prescription for 6 months at a time. I know it isn't a big help but I'm working on 'every little helps' and that would be £15 saved. Some of the better online pharmacies will take a 6 month script and send out monthly as repeat prescriptions so look to them to help spread the expense. Do discuss this with your vet. As long as he realises you're not trying to avoid any necessary check ups there's no reason for him to refuse.

Re: vet bills

Sorry to hear you're having a difficult time. I can only suggest what others have about comparing vets and medication fees, shop around online and maybe call some vets to see if they can help out and sort some kind of plan out for you.

I really hope find a solution soon.

Pleased that Lucy is doing better with her meds and good food
