Antifreeze
Had to put some antifreeze in my wife's car tonight and as most people are aware antifreeze (and its main component Ethylene Glycol) is a horrible cat killer. I discovered after all the shops had closed that the radiator needed topping up so had to head to local supermarkets to try and find the dreaded antifreeze. Tried 3 supermarkets and they all sell pre-mixed antifreeze ready to put straight into your radiator/water system. The 3 I visited were Morrisons, Asda and Tesco and they all sold antifreeze which contained Ethylene Glycol of one form or another.
For those cat owners who aren't aware Ethylene Glycol is very sweet so cats (and dogs) are attracted to it and do find this easy to drink which is a major problem as consuming only a small amount can prove lethal to animals. Morrisons and Asda sell theirs for in between £2 to £2.50 whilst Tesco brand was £4.00 per litre. There is some good news though as Tesco state on their label that they have added a bitterant (sic) to the antifreeze to make it harder to drink. Hopefully this will have the same affect of dissuading animals as well as humans from tasting it. Hopefully if you need antifreeze you too will be able to track down an antifreeze with a bitterant in it too. Twice the price maybe but worth every penny. |
