Help please....

Since I got my 2 kittens 5 weeks ago, Freesia jumps up and tries to eat from my plate and now Poppy follows suit

At first, I thought it was ok but now i am worried that my food will upset their stomachs but they still keep persisting and I am allowing them...even hand feeding my food to them too

What can I do...??

Re: Help please....

just stop feeding them your food!
you are rewarding them for something you dont want them to do whats the point in that???
just take them off the table and put them on the floor, followed by a stern NO! or a little water pistol- that teaches 'em pretty quick

Re: Help please....

Firstly don't reinforce the behaviour - you are rewarding a behaviour you wish to extinguish; so that won't happen.

Keep them out of the room whilst you eat or gently place them back on the floor (you wil have to do this lots) - I've always found a gentle blow in the face stops them in their tracks along with an 'uhuh'. As you have allowed the behaviour for a while it will take a while to stop.

Re: Help please....

Max is interested in my food too, what I do is put his out just before I sit down with mine (never the other halfs!) and if hes still after mine I just put him onto the floor, takes a while but he gets the hint.

Re: Help please....

It is one of the hardest things to stop, how can you resist when you have a face looking at you as though they haven't eaten in 100 years

But if you ever want to eat a meal in peace again, then you have to start being very firm! A stern NO will work most times, putting them back on the floor time and time again will work eventually, if all else fails putting them in another room, even if they cry, will teach them pretty soon who is boss

Molly will still, at just over a year old, come and sit with us when we are eating, but she knows she isn't allowed to touch! She tries the 'I love you so much' face, she tries 'if I put my paw on daddy's arm, he's bound to give in' trick, she tries 'if I roll on my back and look all sweet' trick ..... but one look from mummy and a NO MOLLY, makes her think twice

All I have to do now is train the OH not to sneak her any bits from his plate!!!!

Please dont use a water pistol, your kittens are not being "naughty" they just need to be shown that they are not allowed to do this.As spid says either remove them from the room or just keep gently putting them back down and say "no".They will learn but it has to be done in a kind way.

I totally agree with this! Also I think ingrid is only picking up her kitten today so not sure how she knows if a water pistol works

Never mind, a stern no and put them on the floor or out the room should work. My two always look at my plate and try to swipe off it even though OH is right next to me eating too

Re: Help please....

Winston has been doing this but we've just been putting him on the floor with a No! he stole a whole peice of bacon off hubby plate the other night!! and tried his hardest to run off with it. I couldn't help but laugh!! much to my husbands disgust!! but we took it off him and placed him in another room.
