Red face hello! (poopy question time)

today has just been packed full of poo! no matter where i turn, there is poopy talk; from 10am nothin but poo on forums and beyond (aka floor), so i may as well join in!
my sis has just got a kitty, Melody, and her 'chorkie', pixie, has taken to eating this strange delicacy that Melody can make in her tummy by magic, like its going out of fashion! and she was even lovely enough to not only share by creating a gaseous toxin, but to throw up all over me, just to be nice!
so from the kitty point of view (asking on dog forum to), apart from lifting the litter tray out of pixies way, how else could this be discouraged? Melody is only 10-11 weeks, so lifting the tray up from pix may make things difficult for Mel?! i know that feeding a dog a little pineapple will make them leave their own poo alone (YT are horrible for poo eating), can it be given to kittens- I'd assume not, right? any other suggestions? please?
i wish that everybody poops was a lie!
thank you so much for reading btw!

Re: hello! (poopy question time)

Apart from the obvious of having it somewhere the dog cant get to it, then I would say something needs to be done to make it unattractive. There is something called anti lick strips to dscourage dogs from chewing off bandages and there are anti-chew strips to protect doors etc. Both are impregnated with cayenne pepper, oregano leaf, lemon and clove oil. So obviously all things dogs dont like, might be worth doctoring some of the kitty poop with one or a mix of the above. Dogs dont like citrus and the smell repels some, so maybe try lemon juice, Clove oil is pretty potent smell wise so that would put her off as likely would pepper. If you make it repellant enough repetitively for awhile, it may be enough to put her off for good.

Normally I would say as another solution try a dog control gate that has a cat flap in it, so that the cat can get access to the room where the litter tray is but the dog cant, as likely the cats probably bigger then the dog in this case or will be it wont work on this occasion

Re: hello! (poopy question time)

Another thought there is something called stool repel um that comes in a tablet form, that you giive to the dog so the poops unattractive, dont know if you can give it to cats as well you could check, but then you have the job of getting it down the cat in the first place, so maybe not workable if it is Ok for cats even,

Re: hello! (poopy question time)

i'll pass that on cuz i'm sure as heck not gonna play with any more poo! (not that i make a hobby of it anyways!) lol
so, just sprinkle the concoction over the poo and let pixie learn the hard way?
i think i'll just not visit for a few days while that gets tested!!
is the stool repel um over the counter? i'll call the vet tomorrow to ask about it if not!
thanks

Stool repel Um is available over the counter, think you may get it in P@H they do a lot of the other products the company makes, you might even get it in a decent pet shop, just looked it up on line heres the link looks like it might be dogs only though. There was another one that came out and I cant remember the name of it that I think might have been through vets only.

You might be hard pressed to find a cat equivalent, dont think you get the problem of cats eating poop as far as I know, think its more a dog problem either their own, other dogs sometimes and some dogs only do it to cat poop.
Even the veterinary one that came out I think it might have been for dogs tbh.
Think we are back to doctoring the cat poop, Malt vinegar might work actually that gives off quite an acrid eye watering odour. Hopefully with the suggestions bearing in mind a dog nose is 1000s more times sensitive then ours a whiff of the deterrant will make her back off.

Just thought Mustard Powder too.

Um, is anyone actually considering the cat in all of this? Strong odours are going to put the kitten off using her tray just as much as they'll put the dog off eating the poo. Can you imagine putting mustard powder down only for that tiny baby to go and scratch around in her litter, cause the powder to become airborn, then either get it in her eyes or up her nose? Really not a good idea!

I'd suggest getting a covered litter tray, then putting it in a room/place that the dog is then very strongly discouraged from frequenting. It's the only way to do this and allow your cat to have a litterbox that isn't dangerous or offensive to her nose, because believe me, if she goes in there and has a bad experience, she'll not try it a second time, and this will mean that she begins to wee and poo outside the litter tray. That habit is a darn hard one to break.

I had a dog and a cat together, and nothing I tried prevented the dog from going prospecting until I put the litter tray in another room and taught the dog that going in there was a big no no. From the voice of experience, this is likely the only thing that will work.

Re: hello! (poopy question time)

the only surefire way I can think of is expensive I'm afraid

use a magnetic/microchip catflap fitted to a blanket box with the littertray inside the box

the catflap only works for the cat (as the collar/chip is in the cat) therefore dog cannot get to poop

Doesnt necessarily have to be in the litter tray though does it?? Didnt suggest the "doctored" poop was.
