So, cat wee, what's good for getting it out?

in particular, leather.

My 'lovely' cat has decided she likes to wee on things round the house (plastic bags, paper, baskets of clean washing etc) and the latest thing has been my favourite leather boots.

i have cleaned them, but they do have a slight cat wee smell about them. Anyone have any experience of this or ideas of what might get the smell out of leather?

The use of ordinary cleaning products is a pointless exercise so you need to use a specific cleaning agent. This link has a recipe for a homemade solution Cat Urine: Clean & Remove Cat Urine in Carpet* FREE Recipe or you could use something like Simple Solutions who make a specific cleaning solution. Do you know what has caused your cat to start this inappropriate peeing?,she may have a urine infection, has she been checked for this by your vet.Because UTI's cause pain, cats will often associate the litter tray with the pain and pee on softer surfaces.Hope this helps.

Will this work with leather though?

She has been doing this for over a year. We have a behaviourist coming in next week. We know what the trigger was (next doors cat staying in the house overnight last September), just trying to sort out how to fix it. Its not a UTI. I can recognise the signs in them when they have flared up in the past - would be easier to deal with if it was! She still goes in the litter trays, but also goes on other things too

I wouldnt like to say what it would do to leather ,it should work okay on most other colourfast surfaces .Unfortunately the scent will be very strong to her so she will continue to be drawn to any spot she has previously soiled,so you have to try to eliminate all traces or she will just be drawn back there.

There's only two rooms in the house she hasn't done it, but its always on something, not on the carpet. For example, at the moment we can't leave any plastic bags on the floor, any fabric (including handbags), any towels and paper. And now leather. My husband was putting his bike jacket back together and it was on the floor. He was putting the padding in, she sat in the jacket, in front of him, and peed in it. We just caught her the other night as she climbed into my friends handbag :-(

I know you say you are certain of the reason behind this, but it all points to a UTI to me.It could be stress related if it goes back to this cat that stayed last year esp if she has had them before.

She hasn't, as far as I am aware, had a UTI. My eldest cat had had them occasionally over the years and I have been able to recognise them. I have discussed all this with the vets, hence the cat behaviourist coming in next week.

Of all the cats, she is the only one doing this. Will also bite you for no reason and i have a lovely black eye at the moment thanks to her.

Beaten up by the cat

Hopefully we will have a better idea next week. We are replacing the flooring in the hallway though so hopefully that will help too.

Re: So, cat wee, what's good for getting it out?

Join the club - I have 17 of the little buggers and plastic bags are like a neon sign saying pee on me - apparently they contain high amounts of ammonia which smell like old pee so making them renew their mark.
A few of mine - one in particular actually who is seriously inbred (reject feral farm cats!!!) he will pee on anything clean - laundry, curtains, towels if you even turn your back for a second while folding laundry you've had it!, we can't put anything on the floor that is new, jackets, bedding - has a habit of once every few months of peeing on my duvet - you can hear the swearing from about 3 counties away!!! His sister has a habit of getting into cupboards and peeing in mugs and cereal bowls - how she actually gets her aim so accurate is a mystery!!!! - needless to say getting anything out of cupboards has to be done carefully!
Nothing will stop the little buggers - they're not quite the full shilling, Kipper even pees in plug sockets which we have to sticky tape up on the kitchen counters as they have shorted out the house before and caught on fire!!
The only way to cut losses - shut all doors to rooms they are not allowed in, nothing placed on floors - always hung up, clean everyday, our curtains are sewn up off the ground out of pee range, nothing at all on kitchen surfaces, cat trays always clean, no carpets just one rug and stone floors - shotgun always at the ready!!! One of the drawbacks of having knocked off pets!!! - Ohh and febreeze is great!!!!!
Mine have had every vet check going to rule out UTI's etc and they have come to the same conclusion - knocked off cats - the one that pees in cupboards actually thinks she is a dog - she even fetches paper balls and sits on command and likes to sit on the tractor dashboard while I'm driving it!!

The rest aren't too bad - but contrary to belieft girls spray just as much as boysdespite all being neutered - it just depends on individual cats really - mine are all rescues that no-one wanted or complete ferals that I have trapped as adults so not really the best to start with!! Can't reccomend anything in particular that gets out cat pee other than elbow grease and the washing machine!!! Bicarb of soda is good for getting rid of odours and avoid any bleach based cleaners as they contain amonia so are just red flags to a cat!!!

Re: So, cat wee, what's good for getting it out?

It's a shame we've missed the summer with this one - I've always found that leaving stuff in direct sunlight for the day tends to help kill off any residual stains/odours that very thorough cleaning couldn't quite manage. I realise this tip is useful to you now with the weather how it is, but perhaps it will be useful in future!
