Getting a new cat but going away for a month

Hey guys,

first post and hopefully lots more to follow when I'm a cat owner again!!!!

My predicament is that I have promised my gf since xmas that I will get her 2 indoors kittens for her bday (in 2 weeks) which I am also very excited about - my predicament is that I am also taking her away for a month in December for a month.

Should we be waiting 100% until we get back in Jan to get the kittens? I'm worried about a couple of things:

- cat's getting bored/missing us etc.... (although my mum is retired and so they could either relocate to hers for a month or she could come over for a couple of hours a day whilst we're away)
- Missing the cats grow in that month we're away and miss them developing there personalities.

So what I'm asking is whether we can get the cats in the next week or two and then leave them with my mother coming to look after them for the month we're off or whether that is just unfair on them and we should wait until we're back in Jan?

Thanks and all the best.

Re: Getting a new cat but going away for a month

Personally I would wait til you get back!
Its not just that they might get bored etc - but they wouldnt really know you if you go away for a month while they are still so small - and I dont know about you but if I was away for a month leaving small kittens at home alone I would do nothing but worry about them.

Enjoy your trip and know that you can get your kittens when you get back.

How about giving your gf and IOU for her birthday - then she knows she is definitely getting them at a time that suits you both?

Perhaps for her birthday you two could track down a new litter and reserve two, by the time you get back from your trip in January they will be nearly ready to take home!

I'd wait also, I wouldn't feel happy being away for a month knowing 2 small kitten's we're alone. I went away for a week for a funeral and left my cat's with my friend and I spent a week worrying about them

I would wait for sure you could always find some that you can visit but won't be ready till January? then at least you'll be able to show her a photo or something on you gf birthday.

I'd say wait until you get back from holiday. Kittens grow up quickly and you will miss so much as well as the fact that the kittens won't know you by the time you get back.
I like MC Willow's idea of a kitten I.O.U.

Re: Getting a new cat but going away for a month

Why not get your GF two 'stuffed' kitten toys with little collars on that say "IOU 2 kittens" on them and then get the real ones in January.

Kittens develop SO much and so quickly, it would be a terrible shame for you both to miss out on it.

Also, just in case you weren't aware, it is better to get kittens that have been with their mommy cat for 12-13 weeks to ensure they are of good health and are well socialised.

The younger the kittens are when they leave their mum & litter-mates, the greater the risk of poor health.

Good luck and please come back to see when you have your new fur-babies and show us lots of pics. We love pics!!!

Re: Getting a new cat but going away for a month

i really think you should really wait until your back home, cats really need stability in their lives especially when they are settling into a new home. When i got my new kitten it took him a couple of weeks to settle with us. He took to me quicker cause i fed him etc but it's took til now (4 months) for him to take to my OH. I think if you get them, go away then come back they will get really confused & will more than likely bond with your mum

You will soon realise that when you do get your babies you might not want to ever go on holiday again, the thought of leaving them is heartbreaking .......... so enjoy it whilst you can
