Kitten Overfeeding

Hi,
I used this forum a few months ago when I first got my new kittens. One of them had terrible diareah and they were both pooing around 7 times a day! I asked for advise in this forum about kitten feeding and kitten pooing and were advised kittens could eat as much as 600g a day each! I was advised by members to rush my kitten into the vet with diareah.
After weeks of worrying, phone calls to the vets and putting the kitten on fresh cooked chicken, I took the kitten to the vets after even more diareah, blood and mucus in it also.
Vet told me that actually I have been overfeeding the poor mite!!! That he couldnt beleive people on this forum were telling me to feed the kittens 600g a day as this was like half their body weight! It would be like us eating half our body weight and it's exactly when us humans eat too much we get the runs! He advised to cut it down to 200g a day (as even his cat only eats 300g a day) so now kitten is on a mix of Royal Canin Sensitivity and Bozita jelly. They eat around 250g a day each and yes, the runs have stopped, the constant pooing has stopped and I have happy kittens.
If a VET has told me that I have been advised on this forum wrongly, maybe people should make sure the advise they give on here is true before ''dishing'' it out?????

Re: Kitten Overfeeding

i am sorry if any members gave you the wrong info, most members do usually say to get vet advise , and most members usually sugguest different things that may help, but the bottom line is to allways get vet advise. i am glad that your kittens are better now,

You say WEEKS OF PHONE CALLS did you not take the cat IN to the vet in the meantime?

Which poster told you to feed the cat 600gram aday? I can not find it on your post count?

With kittens WITHOUT DIARRHOEA the only advice I have been given on here is to feed little and often NOT 600gram A DAY to a kitten with ONGOING DIARRHOEA for WEEKS Was you actually feeding a kitten that much despite having THE KITTEN WITH DIARRHOEA

Honestly I think you have to take some of the blame here come on

I am really pleased your kitten is better. To be ill for WEEKS must of been horrendous for the poor thing

Hi, I've had a brief look through your previous posts/threads and can't find where you were told to feed 600g per day per kitten I have found a post where another member says it's not unheard of for kittens to eat 600g - see link - but all kittens/cats are different, you know your cats best and to be honest, we need to take a lot of what we read on this forum and other forums with a pinch of salt.

I'd be interested if you could post back with a link where someone told you to feed that much rather than the way it was worded on the thread I've linked. Kitten feeding and kitten pooing!

There is no way any of my kittens would eat 600g of food in any one day. But, I have a breed that are known to be 'little and often' eaters.

Glad to read that the diarrhoea issued are resolved now with your kittens.

To reiterate - this forum and other forums are not an authority. People post on their own experiences, and sometimes even that is without foundation or truth

Also with diarrhoea issues, a vet should have been consulted sooner.

Re: Kitten Overfeeding

Personally I would have consulted the vet beforehand if it had been going on for more then a few days, alot of members know their stuff on here however they base it on their own kittens/cats, it's always best to seek a vet if in any doubt especially after being ill for a few days. Glad to hear your kittens are feeling better

Re: Kitten Overfeeding

I think I've seen the thread in question and the wording was "it's not unheard of for kittens to eat 600g a day" in amongst instructions to let them eat as much as they liked unless they started leaving it. Nobody told you that was what you should be feeding them!

At the end of the day, whatever you hear from anywhere (from vets to internet forums and everywhere in between) needs to examined and applied on a case-by-case basis. You know your cats, their activity levels, their habits and needs better than anyone as you spend the most time with them.

For what it's worth, 600g might be totally out of the question for a little moggy kitten but for some of the bigger breeds I can totally imagine that being feasible.

I am very glad your kittens are on the mend!

Re: Kitten Overfeeding

Even if some misguided poster had said to feed a particular amount to a kitten it is surely up to the owner to take responsibility for their own actions. There are always going to be a variety of opinions on a forum. It isn't OK to use an open forum and then let a situation continue for weeks before seeking veterinary advice.

Re: Kitten Overfeeding

I did contact the vets and listened to THEIR advise the first time he had diareah and took their advise. Nobody needs to get on their soap box, kitten is fine now and that's all that matters. Just wanted to warn others about listening to advise on forums and yes your right ALWAYS seek vet advise and take advise on forums/Internet with a pinch of salt

Re: Kitten Overfeeding

So how long did you continue with the boiled chicken and broth - and how much of that were you giving them? It should only be used to try to stop the dire-rear for no more than two weeks after that you need to look at other things. When did you go to the vets - you say you were advised to go, but did you go immediately or did you wait weeks?

Don't think I could force my kitten to eat 600g - though for a while she was eating about 400g - now back down to 250g. Each kitten is an individual and you have to be a sensible owner and use your common sense. How about before 'dishing out' the accusations you actually make sure you have followed the advise given rather than taking it out of context.

Re: Kitten Overfeeding

I did everything I could for my kitten, so making any sort of accusation that it was somehow my fault or I didn't follow advise is disgusting and you as caring pet owners should be ashamed of yourself.
