Whats best for feeding my Kittens?

Hi Guys

At the moment im feeding my kittens wet food 3 times a day and biscuits are put down for them to graze on throughout the day.

I want to do the best for them but dont know how much of everything they should be having. In fact someone just told me they mainly feed their kitten dry food and just one wet meal a day and another friend only feeds their cats dry food?

Im confused

Help?!

Re: Whats best for feeding my Kittens?

There's loads of info re feeding cats out there - unfortunately a lot of it (ie that which recommends dry food for cats) is a bit rubbish!

Here are a couple of links for you:

Feeding cats for beginners (and more seasoned cat owners alike)

Feeding Your Cat: Know the Basics of Feline Nutrition :: healthy cat diet, making cat food, litter box, cat food, cat nutrition, cat urinary tract health

If you read the health and nutrition forum as well you'll get a lot of info as well.

There's also an excellent book if you want to read in more detail:

Good luck!

Re: Whats best for feeding my Kittens?

A quick reply as it's nearly home time.

Continue with your wet food, this is MUCH better for cats and kittens!!!!! Dry food to graze on during the day is fine although it would be more beneficial if the dry was Orijin, Arcana or Applaws as these are grain free and better for kitty.

Kittens should really be fed as much as they want to eat as they are energetic little bundles and burn off their energy consumption very quickly. Plus, they only have wee tummies so can't eat great big amounts in one go so if you are in a position to feed small amounts more often that would be even better.

What brand(s) of wet food are you feeding? If you are going down the avenue of ordering the better quality stuff such as Bozita, Grau, Animonda, Smilla etc from Zooplus then you are already feeding very well. There is also raw feeding that can be considered.

I hope this is a helpful start and I'm sure there will be many others who will be able to offer further advice to this.

Re: Whats best for feeding my Kittens?

are you working at all or u staying at home with the little one?
I feed mine Bozita and Animonda Carny different flavours, only wet.. I have been adviced (on this forum) that feeding your kitten good quality adult food is the best option.. They dont eat much of it cos it fills them up.. I normally just put full table spoon of food into his bowl and check every so often when hes done with it, then I refill it.
I have been told before that kittens should eat roughly 5 meals a day.. 50g of food for each meal..
when i go to work i have to leave him food in the bowl for roughly 2 meals, then i use automatic cat feeder (cat mate c20) and it opens with the portion of roughly 50g..
then i come home from work i just do my normal routine.. keep checking Charlies bowl until everything's been eaten..

I find it hard to work out how much my cat eats, especially during the day in the week days, he seems to eat more at the weekends when we both there to control it. Every so often I come home to find his bowls half emptied.. He doesnt seem to eat properly when we not there.. Maybe cos he sleeps most of the day

hope that helps x
