Rant - Pet Shop Selling Young Kittens

I was contacted by a friend earlier in the week. Her friend had bought a kitten from a local pet shop - 2 different litters were together (I was surprised as didn't think that was still allowed) which was supposed to be 8 weeks but was tiny and wanted to be cuddled all the time. Her friend thought the kitten was younger than that. I thought the kit sounded more like 4-5 weeks and suggested they make sure it was kept warm and fed regular small meals (was eating little bits of dry food) and didn't become dehydrated. However, within 48 hours the kitten went downhill and developed diaroheaa - the vet gave him a shot and some special food but only gave him a 30% of pulling through. He thought the kitten was just about 4 weeks old The lady did go back to the pet shop to have a go at the owner and even before she said anything the man told her if her kitten had fleas it wasn't from his place...so obviously he had had another complaint.
She did give him a piece of her mind but he was extremely obnoxious.

Sadly despite all they did for the kitten this poor wee baby died yesterday - they are understandably devastated (they had been nursing him through the nights etc). They are experienced pet owners and in the past have had their animals from reputable rescues but just fell in love with this kitten.

My friend was just trawling through a free website yesterday and saw these adverts from the pet shop involved. In one he says must be 7 weeks old and in the other 8 weeks - but it would appear he can't tell the different between a 4 week and a 8 week old kitten - what he said and what he does are obviously not the same.

Re: Rant - Pet Shop Selling Young Kittens

Can you please post a phone number....address would be better if you can find out where it is..I assume it's in your area?....I will report them that#s disgusting...orphan kittens can and do survive after about 5 weeks...i've reared them before on occasion but it is far from ideal to sell them....as from a pet shop...well given the right age it depends on whether they're on the premises or one of the owners are selling them but they're cared for elsewhere....we see rabbits and guinea pigs...degus...hamsters...chinni's in pet shops every day and if you ask me a rabbit...especially a giant rabbit can sometimes be just as big as a cat....to me all animal selling should be run past tight screening first and ths bloke is obv a prat,

Re: Rant - Pet Shop Selling Young Kittens

Hi!
How very very sad
The petshop needs reporting hun. A local pet shop near me that sold dogs and cats (!!!) got reported and they got done for it I think because of puppy farming or something. Anyways, they only sell gerbils etc now. If this person cant even tell the difference between 4 weeks and 8 weeks then they are not equipped to sell the poor animals!!! Report them to trading standards and RSPCA x

And report them to the local council as they are the ones who gave the idiot the license to sell animals - they are also usually the ones to take action quicker with things like this x

Oh he has been reported to the Council and RSPCA - so we will have to wait and see if anything is done. I may suggest they contact Trading Standards too.

Those poor babies

People like that need a good kick up the arse!! But I suppose all the time they are allowed to get away with it they won't stop. I dont know all the legal issues about selling cats in shops (blimey if Harrods can do it, then anyone bloody can!) but it is something that should be banned FULLSTOP! Even for those with money who think they can get away with anything because they have a posh name over their door!!!

Re: Rant - Pet Shop Selling Young Kittens

I think pet shops have to apply for a licence to sell each category of animal and it can be withdrawn if they fall short on standards. Mind you, they are pretty basic standards to start with.

Re: Rant - Pet Shop Selling Young Kittens

How sad, poor kitten.

I can think of 4 pet shops near me which sell both puppies and kittens, it is a worry not just for the health and well being of pups and kittens but the fact they are more likely to be bought on a whim.
