Injured cat

Good morning all
Our 18 month old kitten was knocked down on Saturday night, she managed to get back home (don’t know how, or she would have been in a lot of pain as we have 6ft walls around our garden), apart from the shock she sustained several injuries, a patch of skin/fur missing from the left front leg, an open wound on the right front leg (my wife said you could see the leg bone but I am not that sure it was that deep), a small cut on her nose and her claws all broken and a few missing. Her paws were swollen too.
We took he straight to the vets on Sunday morning and they stabilized her and gave her some pain killers saying that they wouldn’t do much to her today they wanted the shock to wear off a bit that they would look at her tomorrow with the view of giving her an anaesthetic to check her over and stitch the open wound, that all seemed to go well and she is now back home, in a cage to try and stop her moving around too much.
However she is still a bit lethargic and sleeping a lot, with her head down (she hasn’t done this before), could this be due to the pain killers she is taking? Also she hasn’t passed anything through her bowel, could this be from the shock or the anaesthetic? Finally I assume her claws will grow back, however what about the missing ones??
It’s a little sad seeing her like this in her cage, and I am sure she is getting a bit fed up, it should be a bit better once she can be let out, at least into the room.
Thanks for any help/advise anyone can help.
Best wishes to all

Re: Injured cat

I'm so sorry to hear that you cat was run over! I can't imagine what she's going through. I haven't really got any answers but I know that when my Yorkie was spayed she didn't have any bowel movements for a while as the vets said she was too sore to push them out. I gave her a mild laxative that the vet recommended. Maybe she could be too sore to push any poop out.

Hope she recovers soon!!

Re: Injured cat

Aw bless her. My cat was run over in June and although he wasnt with me for the first 2 weeks cos he was in intensive care he was very depressed which I'm guessing your cat will be too! I think probably still in shock and the pain killers will also be making her sleepy they did with oscar all he did was sleep while he was on them, but I think while they are sleeping they are healing! I think the bowels is nothing to worry about yet but keep an eye on her, might be best ringing the vet if only for reassurance! Hope she gets better soon xx

Re: Injured cat

Best call your vet and discuss your worries. He knows exactly what he has given your cat, what injuries he has, and if the combination of his condition and medication is likely to have this effect....

If not, there may be additional internal injuries that need to be looked at, but ONLY the vet will be able to assess the implications of the cat's condition.

No use if we speculate about it, it may be quite harmless and logical, but it may also be a sign of further problems, and ONLY your vet can tell.
So don't hesitate, but call him, and get the reassurance you need from soneone who knows what he is talking about, or in the worst case, be ordered to come to the surgery straight away, if it should be bad news.

I sincerely hope it is nothing to worry about, but if it is, you will never forgive yourself for being lulled into inaction by comforting suggestions from us.

Do get your reassurance from the one person in the world who can really tell: the vet who has seen your cat in his present condition.

Re: Injured cat

I agree. Phone the vet, they won't charge for that. Best to be sure, poor cat

Re: Injured cat

Hi all
Thanks for the all comments; she has to go this afternoon to have the dressing changed and I assume to have a check-up, I will ask the questions then, I was just wondering if other people have had a similar experience.
I will let you know how she gets on, there is talk of skin grafts to replace some of the damaged/missing skin.
Best wishes to all.

Re: Injured cat

If it is a deep wound, or one in a place with much muscle movement underneath, a skin graft is a perfect option.
I think you have a very good vet, who is really weighing his options.

My Tosca had a wound in her armpit that wouldn't heal. We kept her indoors for months to prevent infection, but it simply did not heal. Once we had decided on a skin transplant, it healed within 2 weeks, and she was as good as new.
It was either the tansplant or euthanizing her, as she could not cope with being an indoor cat, she got very depressed and listless. And with an open wound that would not heal, she had no future as an outdoor cat.The skin graft saved her life.
