Why is he eating so much?

Hey guys, im new to the forum.

We had two cats up until last week, but sadly our older cat passed away with kidney problems and a large tumour.

We are left with out 6 year old gorgeous ginger tabby.
He is suitably sizable, 5kg in weight.
He has always eaten a lot, perhaps its just more noticebale now the girl has died,

he eats EASILY 4 pouches of food a day, sometimes up to 6, hes far from fat, but hes a stocky boy, appears very healthy.
He eats some dry food, but prefers wet.

Is this normal to be eating to much food daily? He keeps his weight and as i say he isnt fat

let me know what you guys think

thanks
andy

Re: Why is he eating so much?

Hi Andy and Welcome to PF!

I'm really sorry for the loss of your cat.

Ok so my questions - Has your tabby started eating more since the other one passed away? Has he got a pot belly at all? When was the last time he was wormed? Is he an active cat? Is he going to the loo properly? Has he lost any weight?

It does sound like he's eating quite a bit and my thoughts are that he might just be sad because he has lost his buddy therefore eating more, He isn't getting enough out of his diet therefore gets hungry more quickly but can also be medical reasons behind (i.e worms, bowel problems) it so it is worth getting him an appointment with the vet as soon as possible to put your mind to rest.

I hope he is ok

Re: Why is he eating so much?

Hi Andy,

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know if that's a lot, but I do know my semi adoptee, Stripey Tail Tom, would happily eat that amount if I gave it to him. He still has a average of 4 pouches a day, topped up with grazing on the available 24/7 dry food and the odd chicken wing/treats. For all the amount he puts away each day, he's still a sleek cat.

He'll eat more in one sitting than my #2 cat, Fudge, will eat in a day, tho' to be fair, Stripey is a lot more active than her, and more in a day than #'s 1 and 3 cats, Bola and Max. The differences between their appetites has long puzzled me, but as long as they're eating and healthy I'm fine with things as they are.

Ian

Re: Why is he eating so much?

Andy-if he's been wormed and he's not putting on weight then this is the normal amount for him, depending on which (size ) pouches you're referring to of course! What is the RDA for a cat of this size then?

What are you currently feeding him then?

Re: Why is he eating so much?

I honestly dont know if he is eating more, i think he is but maybe im noticing it more because we have lost angel (the girl).
If he is its only a pouch or so, but he still seems hungry even after four pouches.
He was wormed about a week ago, and about 6 months before that. He has a very very slight belly, but the rest of him is just muscle, hes a big boisterous boy. Very active, always out playing.

Dont know about the loo, only ever seen him use the tray once in the two years we have had him, he is very clean, and wont go unless he absolutely has to.

He was checked out by the vet about a week ago, just a general health check up, and she said he seemed ok, but obviouls yno way of knowing whats going on inside.

he is sick everytime he eats if we give him a full pouch, but if we give him half a pouch, then wait five minutes, then the other half hes fine, he was a rescue and obvioulsy had to race for his food in the cattery, so he guzzles his food really fast, the vet thinks the being sick when he eats is just behavioural.

CHeers guys

Re: Why is he eating so much?

what brand and size are the pouches?

if it's felix or whiskas or such like, then I think 4 pouches is around the recommended amount for an adult cat.
