Just felt like a right idiot at the vets

Oh gawwwwd!! Took Luna to have her stitches removed and there was a cat on the floor in his/her cat carrier. His/her owner was pacing and couldnt seem to settle while poor puss was trying to claw its way out of the carrier and giving a really sad wail. They took him/her into the vets and came out around 10 minutes later sobbing and minus moggy receptionist basically gave her condolences and they left .

Well I filled up straight away, the lady accross the way with her small dog looked away, as did the lady next to her with a terrier. None of us could speak or even look at eachother, my dad just sort of sat there in an akward silence. I didnt realise but I was holding Luna's cat carrier really close to me and she had shuffled in the carrier so her head was near me as though she was trying to snuggle into me but her ears where down. I felt like such an idiot for nearly crying and it wasnt even my cat but that poor family .

Luna is fine her wound has healed beautifully and we were in there for all of a minute with the vet himself. So glad, she couldnt get back in the carrier quickly enough and headed straight for my mum when she got home.

You are not a idiot, just a caring person with empathy for other owners...nothing worse than having to say goodbye to a friend. xxx

It's nothing to feel stupid about. I'm sure most of us wouldn't be able to help thinking what we would personally feel like if it were us in the situation. I'm sure they would be glad to know that you cared too

Good to hear that your kitty is on the mend as well

There's nothing wrong with feeling someone else's sorrow. You shouldn't feel embarrassed.

I do think there's something not right about how people have to wait in reception knowing what's about to happen. When we had Sooty put to sleep, he was an in patient, but we had to wait in the waiting room while they prepared him Its just horrible. I know that they don't really have much choice but its so hard trying to hold it together when you know that you are about to lose a loved pet.

Re: Just felt like a right idiot at the vets

I remember 20 years ago I took my dog to the vet to be PTS and this lady saw the tears in my eyes when I was waiting in the reception area to see the vet, she came and sat next to me and gave me a cuddle. That took me by surprise but she obviously thought I needed it. God that is the worst feeling having to have your pets PTS.

Re: Just felt like a right idiot at the vets

You are not an idiot at all I think I would of been the same. It made me cry just reading about it. It must of been really upsetting for everyone in that waiting room not just the owner. I wish there was a way of making this vet trip a little more private and more sensitivity shown to the owner. When we had to put Ranger to sleep (my childhood dog) we had the vet come to the house and did it in the garden. We thought it would be too stressful to take him to the surgery and we knew the last thing he would see was the sunshine and people who loved him.
GillyR, Etienne and Howlinbob like this.

Re: Just felt like a right idiot at the vets

It's not silly at all, I would have felt the same.

Our previous vet would let devastated owners out of a separate exit door so that they wouldn't have to walk through Reception and have people seeing them in bits. We found this out when we had to have our glorious Sylvester pts in 1999 - it was sudden, exploratory op revealed hideous cancer - so very shocked, he was still under when we turned up to say goodbye and he was pts there and then. We were shown out of the separate exit door and I practically collapsed in the street sobbing. We were in no state to even pay the bill, so the bill came in the post a few days later!

It's truly one of the worst things we have to go through with our pets.
