Survived our first vet visit.
Survived our first vet visit.
The boys went to the vet for the first time today as Oslo was finally old enough for his first shots (Odin was ready 2 weeks ago but decided to get them both done at the same time).
Thankfully the vet & receptionist were both fluent in english, but had hubby there just in case anyways. They were weighed (Odin 2.2kg Oslo 1.5kg), given a once over by the vet (checked ears, teeth, listened to their heart etc) & then given their first jabs. I also got a script for worming paste - which hubby needs to pick up from the chemist - the boys haven't shown any signs of having worms but as they have never been done, its better to be safe than sorry - after all their mums obviously wandered at least once to mate with males unknown.
The practice seems ok - well equipted (only saw one small exam room but they advertise as providing a range of diagnostic & surgical proceedures). Of course they stock the full range of RC & Hills products - which are all stacked on shelves around the waiting room, but other than being right there, there was no actual push to get you to buy any of it....which is just as well cause I would have had no hesitation telling the vet they were deluding themselves if they thought any of it was good enough for my boys.
The only disconcerting thing is that during the Oslo's examination (Odin had already been dealt with and was in the carrier), their waste disposal contractors turned up to collect waste (I assume it was biological & medical waste) - which was stored in a room off the exam room we were in. None of that bothered me, I'm intelligent enough to know that vets offices produce waste, and the all that entails, and I wasn't even fussed that they had to come through the exam room we were in to collect it. What did annoy me was that they removed the waste via an external door directly off the room we were in while Oslo was out of the carrier - if he had been so inclined, he could have made a break for it as there was nothing stopping him heading straight out that door.
Anyways, apart from the bill (and when is that ever good) it was mostly a good experience, the vet was certainly very knowledgable, and handled the cats extremely well, although they were on their best behaviour, and neither of them even flinched when they got thier injections.
Coming home, hubby & I were discussing how we'd pretty much already blown the cats budget for the month (the vet bill was higher than expected as they hadn't included the consultation fee when we had rung to find out how much it would cost to get them vaccinated) - and that's before we order in another 60-80 quids worth of Bozita at the end of the month ) - yet he still insisted that I stop at the petshop and pick up some Applaws for them, since they had been so good at the vets (he's smitten with the kittens despite how much he insisted he didn't like cats and never wanted one ).
Anyways, they came home, polished off a pouch of Applaws and have been curled on the bed asleep ever since. Now just need to do it all again in 4 weeks when we go back for boosters and then hopefully nothing until January when they go in to have thier bits snipped.
