Re: Son moved back in and brought his Rosella help please.
Is there anywhere else in the house where he would get to see and hear people but where the cats dont go? Maybe your son could take him back to the bedroom and work out a way of spending more time with him/ leave a TV on kiddies programms when hes not there so Rio has some company???
Birds can be messy we have an African grey and we bought a cheap bit of lino to go under his cage to help reduce the mess on the floor.. No one will shout ... each person has their limit yours has obviously been reached.. You sound as if you are trying to do your very best in a difficult situation... |

Re: Son moved back in and brought his Rosella help please.
I am finding it hard as I am not used to this kind of mess he will spit his food at the cats to get their attention. My son works shifts 12 hours on the docks at the moment he is on nights. Don't get me wrong he is a lovely bird but I am frightened of feeding and watering him anything that entails putting my hands in the cage or opening the door where his food and water are in case he bites me I clean him out daily as it is just pulling the base out and washing it but I have now put newspaper on that ( my son did not want me too) to make it easier for me to clean as parrot poo is difficult to wash off I am just tired from keep prising the cats off the cage and not having time to myself plus my GSD and JRT are forever waiting outside the cage for any nuts or fruit he spits out thanks for being understanding

Re: Son moved back in and brought his Rosella help please.
Hi Vivien what a nightmare. As an animal lover I can understand that you feel the need to accomodate your sons parrot, but not at the expense of your sanity.I dont have any answers for you other than the bird goes back in his bedroom and he spends more time in there with it,it is after all his responsibility not yours. If he had moved into a flat ect on his own he would have to find ways to entertain it.Reading this back it sounds a bit harsh but for the birds safety, your cats safety and your sanity I cant see another solution.Hope it all works out, it is sad when a relationship breaks up.

Re: Son moved back in and brought his Rosella help please.
We have only had Basil our CAG since july. so Im no bird expert..
He has big trust issues due to his last owner,, anyway we have the three dogs and they are not used to birds so for the first week I put some old curtain fabric around the bottom half of his cage so that they couldnt put ther noses in and get bitten.. I know some people do this with plexi plastic sheeting you could try some of this and across the top (if its a flat top) to protect Max from bites.. It also helps to keep down the mess a bit.. Its not very expensive and most DIY shops will cut it to size for you too, attach with small bolts.. My dogs eat everything Basil throws at them but they are walking dustbins.. He used to throw everything but when he realised I wasnt going to keep refilling his bowl every half hour he stopped it.. Try feeding a little less and more often so the bowl is never too full.. As for the newspapers in the base I do the same.. quick easy clean and as news print no longer contains lead its not considered dangerous. I hope you work it out... |
