Sleeping on the bed.
Up until now ozzie has been kept out of the bedroom at night, with access to the hall & kitchen. I quite like the idea of allowing him intothe bedroom to sleep but doubt I will get much sleep if I do. Whats the consensus on letting cats share the bed? Am I being mean if I don't? I always thought cats were nocturnal so should I just keep the door shut & leave him play ? He will meow outside the room periodically and I dont know whats the fairest thing to do.

Re: Sleeping on the bed.
All my lot are free to sleep wherever they want in the house and that includes a choice of 2 beds, mine and the spare. As I let them sleep on mine during the day I can't really refuse them the same at night, tho' I have a couple of complaints. I usually end up either balanced precariously right on the edge or I'm scrunched up in a corner while they're all stretched out luxuriously.

Re: Sleeping on the bed.
It is a tricky one and I think it is different from cat to cat. Cats are crepuscular which means they are more active at dawn and dusk so you may not find it is in the middle of the night that Ozzie plays but at the crack of dawn (again this seems to vary).
I let Jaffe sleep in the bedroom the first few nights he came home and I got NO sleep so he was shut out the bedroom. Although he cried the first couple of times he was shut out I knew he had loads of food and water, a bed and loads of toys so I had nothing to worry about and he was a happy chappy. When my partner was away and also when I went to my sisters to cat sit I once again let him in the bedroom (we played before hand to wear him out) and he settled down and went to sleep and didn't wake up till 6am. Maybe it was because he didn't have to fight for space with my OH I'm not sure but certainly would not settle when my OH was in the bed too. I guess it's up to you to give it a go and see how much sleep you get but you are not mean shutting him out the bedroom if you are worried about your sleep. Jaffe is no less of a happy kitten for not being allowed to sleep with us at night and I know a lot of cat owners who do this so they don't have to be woken up at sparrows fart (dawn) by a very excited kitty jumping on their bladder or sitting on their face etc etc ![]()

Re: Sleeping on the bed.
All mine have had the option as to where they sleep, that includes mine or my daughters bed, the living room - sofa or arm chairs or on the kitchen table. (not used for eating). Jess has her own spot on the kitchen window sill with 2 fleecy blankets and her food nearby. The only problem I find with the bed scenario is that Tibbi will go into a dead sleep and moving her is almost impossible and she snores terribly.

Re: Sleeping on the bed.
Cats love to sleep with their humans. We used to have three cats asleep on the bed and the dog asleep at the end of the bed.
I lost my last cat three years ago and that is the one thing I miss more than anything, having a cat to sleep with.

Re: Sleeping on the bed.
I have always shut Harry and now Oscar out of my room at night - I work funny hours and it would be hard to develop any kind of sleeping pattern with them. Oscar is also a manic foot pouncer!
Harry is free to wander as he pleases and chooses to spend the night outside usually, Oscar has been sleeping downstairs with no issues at all, he cottoned on pretty quickly that I wouldn't open the door once I'd said goodnight. We now have Kitty too - and I'm just wondering what to do for the best tonight. I have introduced Kitty to the spare room today just in case they need to be separated. |

Re: Sleeping on the bed.
I've always liked co-sleeping with a nice pussy cat. When I was little our family Burmese, Pywackett, used to always come into my bed as no-one else would let her in theirs. She would get under the covers and sleep with her head on the pillow, matching me.
Now I've moved half way around the world where it actually gets cold in Winter and I really appreciate my boys snuggling in with me. I've been encouraging them to sleep on our bed since we first got them, even though they are very cheeky some nights. They have their own bedroom and they often nap in there during the day but as soon as someone lies down they are there within about 10 minutes. I often complain about the lack of space, the noise, the little cold paws that insist on finding warm skin and the wake up licks in the morning but secretly I love it |
