Re: At my wits end

I haven't changed litter - they have been on OKO since I got them. No other changes I can think of. I phoned the vet and spoke to him about it, he said it didn't seem like a UTI because he is still going in the tray and only going outside the tray sometimes. He thought it sounded more like scent marking as he is approaching 6 months so he was neutered last week. Is it something I am just going to have to stick out as I know he is still fertile for about 6 weeks after neutering? The vet did say he could give me a course of ABs for him to see if they help but they either will or they won't if it is not a UTI which is why I went for the neuter. I don't know anything about UTIs so not sure if they still go in the tray as well as outside it when they have one? |

Re: At my wits end
When Basil had a UTI I only bacame aware of it because he was using the litter tray so frequently. He never went anywhere else (although Winnie, my other cat did when she had one) only his tray.
I would take him in for an examination & maybe try to get a sample to be tested |

![]() The vet seemed pretty willing to just give me a course of ABs and see if it helped without taking him in. Should I go with that or insist that he is seen? He was in not even a week ago to get neutered because of it so I'm guessing he would have got an examination before his op? |

Re: At my wits end
I've been going through a similar thing with my cat, Oscar.
He's 18, and recently started having "accidents" on the sofa, but also using his litter tray. I had his urine tested this Saturday for a UTI, which he doesn't have, but he did have a miniscual amount of white blood cells (protein in his urine). The vet said that this wasn't necessarily indicative of an infection but did indicate some sort of bladder irritation which can be caused by stress but not necessarily so. There is something called Cystaid/Cystese which can be put on their food, but she felt this didn't warrant its use, but we have decided to use a Feliway plug to see if that helps. So far he's not done it again. Its worth getting a sample to rule out any UTI and to check whether he has protein in his urine. If you speak to the vet they should give you a pack of special cat litter made from plastic balls so the urine doesn't soak in. Then I'm afraid its a case of using the pippet supplied in the back and sucking it up and putting in the test tube ![]() Also try Simple Solutions Extreme which I have used....its great! |

Re: At my wits end
It could be a stress thing? Has anything changed in the household? Is he doing anything strange before he pees on the floor? Is he crying at all? I have a book on behaviour I'll have a read through it and see if there is anything in there that might be able to help you. I know it's stressful but I'm sure the problem can be resolved, just need to figure out what the problem is.

Re: At my wits end
Nothing has changed in the house and he isn't crying or anything. Kept an eye on him this afternoon and he just disappeared under the cupboard so I got a hold of him and put him in the litter tray and he peed as soon as I put him in.
I fuss him and give him milk drops when he goes in the tray. He doesn't show any signs that he is about to pee, he just goes under the cupboard and pees. The only way I know he has been is if I see the pee or hear him scratching at the floor after he has been. |

Re: At my wits end
If he is weeing on the floor then a sample is easy if it's lino or laminate/wood, ask the vet for a syringe and suck the wee puddle up into to it, it's not sterile but good enough, my cat will go in the tray and on the floor and the cooker top when she had a bout of UTI's, so I would definitely get him checked for this.
Are the trays covered trays or open trays and are they in quiet spots or busy spots in the house, as I know Maudey doesn't like to be watched or disturbed when she gets in the tray (she is a complete stress ball) she like to do her stuff stuff alone and quietly and will hop out of the tray if she is interrupted. You could also try a different litter in one tray and see if that makes a difference as he may not like the OKO even though he has been using it for awhile as there is nowt so fickle as cat and they like to keep you guessing, but first stop would be the Vets to check for a UTI. |

Re: At my wits end
Excuse my ignorance of cat anatomy & how neutering is done but if he has just been neutered I would wonder if the invasive procedure had set up a uti. Sounds like a sample if you can get it or a course of antibiotics might we worth a try?
