a problem im having.

a friend of mine has recently gotten some kittens and they kept telling me they were having accidents everywhere. so i asked them what they were doing and i was informed that they are trying to train them to use the human toilet. to me it just sounds stupid to do something like this when they are barely old enough to fully understand how to use a litter tray. i thought you would need to fully litter train them really well before you could even attempt this. so i thought i would as you lots opinion as i have never tried human toilet training so i would not know how it is best done.

Re: a problem im having.

The only methods I have seen (though I havent exactly looked into it extensively) begin with putting a litter tray thingy in the loo, then removing the middle, then removing the whole thing so they carry on going into the loo. Not something would do, but I would have though that litter training would be essential to the process.

exactly my thoughts, they think they know best so i am leaving them to it and keeping my nose out. but to me it is just a bit of a weird way of doing it

Re: a problem im having.

How old are the kittens? If theyre not litter trained then theyre probably too young to be away from mum.

My cats have fell in the loo before, so I would love to see them attempting to go to the loo in it. I know people have done it but I can't imagine its comfortable for them to perch on that slim rim of a loo seat!

Re: a problem im having.

Both my boys are toilet trained but I started when they were a year old as I needed to be home all the time for the initial period. The litter kwitter is for 4 months plus and some people in Aus (where the litter kwitter is from) start training their cats earlier, so you purchase a kitten that is partially trained.

Does your friend have a step stool for them? And were all the kittens trained to first use one litter tray near the toilet? To avoid accidents you need very small changes and lots of positive encouragement.

We also have a special toilet seat that is meant to be for both adults and children, with an extra ring that is magnetic so can clip up or go down. My boys are ocicats, so a bit clumsier than some breeds and I prefer them to have the extra space but lots of other cats seem fine with balancing on a standard seat.

It certainly doesn't and I think they are doomed to failure, poor kitties

It is an interesting concept when done properly.

Re: a problem im having.

It's hard enough to get in the bathroom in our house as it is, without having to queue while 3 cats are using it as well.
