Do your family and friends understand your relationship with your cats?

I have to say that I think only those who have animals themselves truly do.I think my family and friends think it's quite sweet and classify me as a slightly (well perhaps more than slightly!) eccentric animal lover who is OTT with regard to the love, care and expense I go to to try to ensure that my cats are leading happy lives. But I don't think they understand the rewards I get from it.There are those (who i wouldn't put in the category of friends) who feel slightly sorry for me and tolerate me,as if I must have something "missing" in my life that I go to this much trouble for animals (how wrong can you be-if only they knew what they were missing?) Just wondered about the reactions you get from other people in your lives?.................By the way,I feel in excellent company on this forum!!

Re: Do your family and friends understand your relationship with your cats?

I am sure a lot of my facebook friends think we are nuts but quite a few have cats. I think most people see that we treat Ella, Archie and Cleo as our kids and as a gay couple it is probably the nearest we are going to, or want to get!

I mean when we got Cleo we wanted another girl so Ella wasn't the only girl in our house!

Re: Do your family and friends understand your relationship with your cats?

On the whole yes they do understand. My in-laws are cat people and two of my friends are cat people. My other friends don't have cats but most are animal lovers and they understand how much the cats mean to both of us. This was especially apparent when Bob died. It was sudden and we were heartbroken. But I was very, very touched by our friends' reaction - lots of long phone calls and all the time in the world to listen to our grief. We had a lot of tearful evenings drinking toasts to Bob and we felt very supported. I suppose you find out who your friends are when something bad happens, and not one of them let us down. We have one bizarre friend who famously does not like household pets, (weirdo!) he wouldn't have understood at all so we just didn't tell him.
