Question Worried about UTI

I have a 13 week old kitten who has some odd litter box habits. He is very good with going in the box, never goes elsewhere, but sometimes he does lots of digging around before finding the right spot and quite often meows alot before and sometimes during peeing. Sometimes it sounds distressed. I am scared it could be a UTI. He never seems to have a blockage, as he usually produces enough pee!

I asked my vet and he thought it was more likely behavioural. He was put on antibiotics for a bowel infection (caused by worms) which has now cleared up. I would've thought that would also clear any UTI.

But he did come from a house where he shared a large tray with 8 adult cats...!! And it was not kept clean and changed. So of course it could be a UTI, but equally could be behavioural. I have read that dominant male cats will try and push the youngest and newest ones out of the box, which must've happened to him anyway. So is he digging and meowing to claim his spot, or should I take him back to the vet...??

Re: Worried about UTI

My kitten seems to dig to Australia and likes to inform me that she is 'going' - often leading me to the box so I can monitor - if he is producing enough and it isn't smelly and he doesn't appear to be in pain I would suggest it's behavioural too. On the safe side just try adding a little extra water to his food to flush him through.
