Smile settling in a new kitten and litter boxes

hey everyone!
i am a first time kitten owner and i am getting a 10 week old male desexed Birman kitten named Leo in 3 weeks.
i have read that i should find a 'safe room' when he first arrives (my bedroom) and to leave him in his carrier ill he comes out-but what do i do while i wait!? should i sit in there with him, play with him or let him be!?
also, it says you have to put the litter box in the room. the problem is, mum says that litter boxes stink and i dont want my room to stink of cat poo and wee!!!
i was wondering what kind of litterbox is best for reducing the stink!!!
(i do not want to change the type of litter he was previously using at the breeder until he is older). in you guys/girls cats opinion,is a hooded, self cleaning or open litter box best?
also, because i have to leave him in his carrier til he comes out, is there a point of me getting him a bed? also i dont mind him sleeping on my bed, so when he is ready will he just jump up or what??????????????

THANKYOU! ingrid

Re: settling in a new kitten and litter boxes

Hi! Welcome to the forum and congratulations on becoming a cat slave!

Kittens are really curious and I don't imagine that it will take long before the urge to investigate his new surroundings overtakes any anxiety he might be feeling. The most non-threatening thing you can do is follow his lead. With my kitttens, I opened the carrier box and moved away....sitting on the floor further away. I didn't approach them at all; I waited for them to approach me.

Litter boxes do stink but there are a lot of people here who say that a covered litter box with Cat's Best Oko Plus litter is the best for keeping smells to a minimum. I haven't been that fussed with the litter but it's about experimenting to see what works for you.

As for a cat bed...some cats use them some don't. If you want to give him the option, just buy a cheap one for now so that you're not out too much money should he decide that he doesn't want to use one.

Re: settling in a new kitten and litter boxes

as for a bed, my last cat slept on the bed with us at night, during the day, she slept on the spare room bed, the cat bed in the back sun porch or under the cover & on my neighbours old mannie scooter

now we have Roscoe, whith a new bed, but he's claimed my pertners soft dressing gown on the floor
