Beware of Thread

I am new to the forum and not very IT literate so bare with me if i am posting in the wrong place.
Can i warn cat owners on the danger of thread! I know it doesn't sound very threatening but my Burmese, Charnley, ate some thread 3 months ago and it was nearly catastrophic. I had no idea it had happened but the thread somehow managed to strangle his stomach and he ended up needing surgery. The only clue i had was that he was off his food and that is not like him! The vet showed me the piece of string that was removed and it was so small but still enough to do major damage. Thankfully it was caught in time and his shaven tummy is almost back to normal. Talk about getting a fright!

Re: Beware of Thread

Frightening experience for you I'm glad to hear your cat is recovering but thanks for the warning. Elastic bands can also cause similar problems so we need to be aware of things like this

Re: Beware of Thread

hi there and welcome - glad your kitten managed to get better - thread is a killer! Good advice.

By the way, I thought your title meant this thread itself was bad!!

Re: Beware of Thread

I am still learning how to use the forum. It was a terrifying experience. I don't even know where the thread came from. You think you keep the house clean but...

Re: Beware of Thread

Yes thread and elastic bands are awful for cats, if you ever see a thread hanging from kitty's bottom never ever ever pull it as if it is long and wound up in the intestines it can slice them open when you tug and pull on it, so snip it off and take cat to vets asap.

Glad Charnley recovered well.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that!

Good news that your kitty is recovering well, and thanks for the warning - I wouldnt have even thought of thread or elastic bands being a danger

Re: Beware of Thread

This happened a few months ago to #2 cat, Fudge. I'd left her on my bedroom windowsill eating while I nipped downstairs to make a coffee, when I came back she was pawing at her mouth. There was a bobbin of cotton on said windowsill and she'd somehow managed to pick the loose end up while eating and swallowed, then kept swallowing.

I was lucky, I managed to pull it free, tho' she'd eaten a good foot of thread and wasn't overly impressed with my pulling it out, but better that than taking the risk of just cutting it, which I couldn't do as I didn't know how much she'd swallowed.
