Some help please....

Hi,
I'm new on here but have been reading some of threads over the last week or so and have found it really useful. I would really like 2 kittens after xmas time but am finding that all the shelters and animal rescue places won't even consider me because I live in a first floor flat! I've read on here that a lot of you keep your cats indoors and some that live in flats and have very happy cats. I have explained that they would be able to go out but only when I'm at home. I do work full time which is why I want 2 so they'll have some company. So I guess I would like some advice on where to go from here, there don't seem to be many kittens around at the moment apart from at rescue centres. I live in Hampshire so anyone from around there with any advice would be especially appreciated. I have always had a cat until I moved out of home, I even had one at uni and am hating being without one!!

Rach

Cats are their own boss, they may not come in when you want them to.

Have you considered a ragdoll?, they are excellent pets, but are strictly indoor cats only.

Re: Some help please....

I'm surprised they wouldn't let you take on a cat/kitten as an indoor pet, we adopted our kitten from the Cats Protection League, they knew very well that she would be an indoor cat (because we had just lost a kitten to the road). They were fine with that, and the adoption went as normal! We just litter trained her, and made sure she had plenty of stimulation, she's a happy healthy 6 year old (7 tomorrow!).

Did you ask if you could adopt a kitten as an indoor pet? Most adults won't adjust to becoming indoor cats after being outdoors, so a kitten is probably your best option. Saying that, we adopted an adult stray who has been outside the majority of his life, and he's an indoor cat living in luxury!

I really hope you can adopt

Re: Some help please....

My cat I had at uni was only able to go out when one of us was at home and she was fine with that. I have considered it but they are very expensive aren't they?

Sarah - thanks for your post. The lady I spoke to at the cats protection was very definite that I couldn't have a kitten if I wanted to keep i indoors and sounded quite alarmed at the thought of it! Yeah I didn't think it would be fair on an adult cat who was used to going out.

Thanks for your thoughts so far guys!! x

i second that i couldnt be without tink but two would be quite costly. they are amazing cats. as are all cats if you couldnt get them from a rescue why dont you look for someone in your area who had some kittens? or look on the breed rehoming. there are a few ragdolls on here who need re homing, one in particular, Pickles is such a hunk

I am very surprised too as I think that an indoor life is the best and safest option for a cat. There certainly are kittens about at this time of year from private sellers but I would also contact a few more rescue centers because you may find they won't all have the same policies.

Re: Some help please....

I live in Hampshire too and I know a colleague had the same problem. He lives in a flat - ground floor but no garden. He is around a lot so the cat/kitten would have had lots of company but the majority of the rescue centres he tried dismissed him because the cat would have had to be an indoor cat.

I think the Cat and Rabbit Rescue at Sidlesham may rehome to indoor homes. My colleague got one from there in the end. He was a 'mature' cat though, but I know they did have a lot of kittens needing homes at one point, but am unsure what their homing policy is for younger cats. May be worth a ring? Don't have the number but if you google it the rescue has its own website.

Re: Some help please....

Have you thought of adult rescue? Some of the breed rescue clubs would be very happy if you enquired with them?

I know someone who got two Cats who had to live indoors from a rescue. I'm sure if you wanted adult cats you wouldn't have the same problem. When I first got Henri I lived in a flat, I used to walk him and he loved it. Henri is not a normal cat though.
