Getting a cat, help

Hi,
We have been looking for a cat,, well initially we were looking for a kitten but I suspect we would be better getting an older cat- I work full time and the better half 3 days a week-so dont think we could be around enough to give kitten attention it deserves (correct me if I am wrong in that assumption though :-) )
I dont think we mind what "type" of cat we get- moggy would be fine- more interested in temprement-easy going, likes cuddles, good with kids (almost 5 and 7 ), happy to go outside but maybe stay inside at night?? Now we are finding it difficult to find cats for sale/free (there are loads of kittens available) that are in good health- to be honest I dont think we can afford to take on a cat who will need extensive vet work as was planning on getting insurance (lifetime) to cover new problems.

Where do you reccomend I look? I am based in Nottingham if that helps- I have checked RSPCA-and they only have 2 older cats on their website

I have seen this ad on Gumtree- cat for salef20 female in Nottingham | Cats & Kittens for Sale | Gumtree.com - any thoughts- did ask a few questions- appears that cat was left with the seller from a friend who has moved to london, when asked about injections- wasnt sure then said had some injections 4mths ago but not sure what, when asked what food cat had- said any cat food- might be that this person does not know about cats but theres a nagging feeling I have- I am just being picky?

Sorry- a long rambling first post with loads of questions but your advice would be appreciated

thanks
