Spaying whilst pregnant

Does anybody know what the risks are? What's the latest they can spay? the girl I took in today is 18months old and has had 2 litter's straight after each other, the latest litter are now 6 weeks old and mummy has been going out since she had the kitten's. I'm not sure she is pregnant and is getting spayed this week.

Re: Spaying whilst pregnant

The major risk is the increased risk of haemorrhage. When pregnant the uterus has more of a blood supply than usual as more blood is needed to help nourish the developing foetuses, so blood vessels will be larger/harder to tie off/more likely to tear.
She may have less lung capacity than usual if big foetuses/large litter, so there's the risk of hypoxia/low oxygen levels during surgery.
Recovery may be more prolonged than usual, due to a bigger spay wound to remove the foetuses, and there's increased risk of haemorrhage after the op as there are bigger blood vessels to be tied off than usual.
The latest they will spay will depend on the vet's own personal preference.
