Indoor cats - windows/summer time

I was just wondering, for those of you who have purely indoor cats, how do you manage in summer time when you want to have your windows open? Is there anything you fit over the windows to stop them escaping.
If you have a cat who has never been allowed to roam as it wishes outside, do they still try to scoot past you when you go out? .. or are yours wary and uninterested? Just wondering how you get round these problems.

Re: Indoor cats - windows/summer time

We have fly screens at all our windows, so we can just open them as normal and the cats can't get out (they have the added benefit of keeping the house free of flies, which is obviously what they're really intended for )

Our indoor cats don't usually try to get out, but Sam does go in the garden wearing his harness, and he doesn't see a different between wearing his harness or not and going out when we say he can or not, so we do have to be a bit careful.

First Summer Breeze

Check out the images at the bottom of this thread. It is what I made to go over all windows we open to let the cats enjoy a breeze without getting out.

Our cats are allowed outside access but not allowed to roam. I still don't want them getting out without knowing about it or knowing where they are.

Re: Indoor cats - windows/summer time

I always have the kitchen window open and my bedroom window open but the cats are completely uninterested in going out. When I open the front door they run away from it rather than run to it! - unless we're coming in then Coco always runs to the door to greet us

Truffles keeps sitting at the window and growls at any one or any thing that goes past!...People, Birds, airplanes, its all fair game!... I'm sure she thinks shes a dog!! but again. hasn't showed any interest in going out but neither have ever been out so what you've never had, you'll never miss i guess.

Mitzi so far hasn't attempted to find an escape route! She has only been here a few days though but has been up on the window ledges and hasn't attempted to go out! She was previously at my mums as an outdoor cat and use to having the cat flap and going in and out as she pleased. But at 13 she wasn't going out so much so hoping its not going to be much of an issue!!
...Otherwise I'll be stealing peoples ideas!

Re: Indoor cats - windows/summer time

Thanks all. The reason I ask is that my cousin got a lovely chocolate BSH boy at the weekend who has always been a house cat so this will continue. Ive told her she needs to join the forum

I think over winter it will be ok but next summer she is going to have to be careful.

aww How old is he? If he has always been an indoor cat he probably won't show much interest - depending on age that is. I think they get passed that 'curious' age then don't really take much notice after that in my experience.

There's a company called Flat Cats, they even give PF members a discount I believe! Might get some for next summer.

Re: Indoor cats - windows/summer time

We have fly screens on the big window's and the little ones are latched and they wouldn't fit through

Re: Indoor cats - windows/summer time

The bedroom windows are open and neither of the girls bother about them. I open the patio doors a tiny fraction so that we get the air in but they can't get out. They don't bother about the top window in the lounge either but I don't leave them alone when it's open. They don't rush to go out if the front door is open but I wouldn't leave it open when they're around. If either them is calling though I make sure they have no access to any open window or door.
