I've just bought a plastic tree and plastic baubles and we unplug the lights at night.

In the morning collect the plastic baubles and put them back on tree

I also spray the lower part of the tree with a citronella pet detterant spray before the lights are turned on (allowing it to dry before electricity is involved obviously) also on the light chord - it discourages the cats from going on and has a nice citrussy piney scent
