Getting a Cat in my Situation?
Hey guys,
I'd really love to have a cat, for I think they are the greatest pets you can have. They are clever, independent, cleaner than dogs, don't require to be walked, they are sloppy if you hold them under their chests, they are fun to watch while the play... I could go on forever. A couple of years ago, I already owned one, but back then I was still living with my parents, so things are quite different now and I fear that getting a cat my be selfish in my current situation. The last thing I want is to bore / hurt a cat. So here's my situation: I'm a student and my flat is pretty small (2 rooms, about 50 mē). During the week, I'm at school 5 mornings a week. Add to that 3 afternoons work a week. So on average I'm not at home for 6-8 hours every day, not counting weekends, when I'm usually at home all the time (save for a couple of hours). I have expensive musical instruments all over my flat, but other than that all my stuff is cheap and dispensable. My mum is a vet, so I could get a well cared for, healthy kitten come litter season (whenever that may be) and discounts on stuff like food, toys and so on. You might now ask why I don't ask her, since she probably knows more about most forum users, but I'd rather be decisive when asking her for a kewt kitten. Thanks for your advice, MeowMeow P. s.: Is it true or just a malicious prejudice that cats, particularly kittens, have poor spelling? Last edited by meowmeow; 23-09-2011 at 07:39 PM.. |

Re: Getting a Cat in my Situation?
That's good to know, but I would only get one cat and I fear it could get lonely in that case.
Another issue I have but am really uncomfortable talking about: Cats eat, thus they have to... uneat. How long does it take your average happy fluffy kitten to use the facilities if I treat him well? |

Very witty, don't quit your day-job though.
You should at least elaborate what concerns you have so I can view your post as more than inane trolling. |

Re: Getting a Cat in my Situation?
I would say hold off. is your flat rented. Are you allowed cats in your flat on the tenancy? What are your long term plans? Where might you be living next? If that will be rented, will that landlord allow it?
A kitten needs attention, 40 hours a week alone is too long. If you love cats maybe a rescue pensioner would suit better. They will be looking for somewhere to sleep and spend their twilight years and would be litter trained already. Plus your expensive muscial instruments would be safer. You say you like cats, so get a cat not a kitten - it will not fit in with your lifestyle!

Re: Getting a Cat in my Situation?
Hi,
Kittens need a lot of attention when young and would really need company. Why not adopt an older (1 year plus) cat that is needs a one cat house hold. In regards to toileting are you saying you wouldn't want a litter tray as that may be a lot to ask a cat.

I hadn't even considered future flat I might move to, for I definitely will move again in the near future and according to mom, that's at least an incovenience and sometimes even a horrid situation for cats and I didn't even consider that my next landlord wouldn't even allow cats. So a kitten would be worst, a grown cat only slightly better. Well, I guess I'll have to wait another 10 years for a pet, maybe I'll settle eventually. |
