Deep sleep scare

I had a huge scare with #2 cat, Fudge, yesterday.

I was sat on the sofa with my feet on a footstool and a old pillow across my lap as the ever moulting #3 cat, Max, had been lying there, said pillow to try and protect my clothes from cat hair. Fudge jumped up onto the pillow and curled up to sleep and as I was so warm and comfy I dozed off as well, but when I woke it looked for all the world like she'd stopped breathing and things got worse when I stroked her as she usually wakes at the slightest touch, but not this time

I tickled her nose with a bit of string, no response so next I gently flicked her ear, still nothing, so I flicked it harder and still nothing. I honestly thought she'd died in her sleep on my lap It was only when I moved the pillow to get up and check properly that she stirred, opening one eye then had a good stretch before curling up asleep again.

I've never seen any cat in such a deep sleep before, let alone one as light a sleeper as her. She's fine and spent the night on said pillow and woke as expected as soon as she heard me going into the living room today, but this little episode had me very, very worried.

Re: Deep sleep scare

It was definitely a panic moment. She's 15+yo so I guess her days are getting numbered, tho' thinking about it, there probably isn't a better way for a cat to go is there?

Re: Deep sleep scare

I've been there too, I think I nearly stopped breathing myself, Scamp used to have a special cubby hole in my sons wardrobe and like your cat had gone into a deep sleep, I stroked him and called him, I couldn't see breathing either, so when he woke up (quite quickly when he did) I nearly jumped out of my skin, I think I had convinced myself that he had passed on, he got a talking to for scaring me but I have never been so relieved

Scary isn't it? I told her not to do it again but she's forgotten already as she's on the pillow, playing dead again, atm

Your right. I would love mine to just fall asleep and dont wake up, not now obviously but when they get old.

Re: Deep sleep scare

One of my old cats used to do this deep sleeping thing, yes more than once and everytime I'd have to check. One time she fell asleep upside down halfway down the stairs, looking like she had a bad fall, but no she was just super-duper relaxed. Thankfully.

Re: Deep sleep scare

its nothing unusual for an elderly cat to sleep deeper, sometimes you may find she could have lost some of her hearing which will make her sleep deeper

Re: Deep sleep scare

I had this only the other day with my Friday cat who is 13, and she has done it before. It is no easier the second or third time around than the first - it's still a massive worry for a few moments I seem to recall also my Harry doing this a while ago, and he is only 7

She can certainly sleep, but that is matched by her having a hair trigger wake reflex and her hearing is as good as ever, touch wood.
