Ragdoll - non allergy...

This morning me and my boy visited a friend who I have not seen for about a year. She is looking after her mothers Ragdoll while she is on holiday (i didn't know this till we got there).
I was surprised as my he had no adverse reaction to this cat at all even though it was in the same room the whole time.

When I arrived i thought "oh no" and kept an eye on him for symptoms thinking we would have to leave, but nothing. Maybe there is something in this view that long or semi longhaired cats are less allergenic.

Re: Ragdoll - non allergy...

yeap ragdolls can course Allergies , there was a thing going round years back saying that raggies were best for people with Allergies to cats as they didn't course much of a reaction which of course was a load of rubbish and sadly because of it more raggies ended up in rescue. Its nothing to do with the cats fur usually its to do with the cats saliva and skin.

I'm not suggesting I just go out and buy one, just that it may be something to consider for the future if we could find a good breeder or a rescue who would let us make some visits and spend some time with lots of them to make sure all ok. Just a thought at this stage....

I think perhaps you should get your son tested for a cat allergy before even considering another cat.

There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic cat, not yet anyway.

Re: Ragdoll - non allergy...

I've had a wee thought JP that might be worth thinking on....

Do you have a rescue place near to you? I was thinking that if you spoke to them & explained the problem your son seems to be having around SOME cats, they might let you visit with a view to letting him mix with different types of cat to see what is causing his reaction.

You could start with a long hair - see what happens...

Move onto a short haired NEUTERED boy - see what happens....

Then try a short-haired girl and see what happens.....

This may assist you in knowing at which point he starts to react and how. You could then use this info going forward in your quest to be a cat owner.

It will also be a lot cheaper than buying a full-on pedigree which could still end up causing the problem.

And who knows, you both might fall in love with the perfect cat at the Rescue and be able to kill 2 birds with one stone.....

Of course, as I say.... it is just a thought for the future at this stage. A mere hint of a possibility thats all.

Hi, yes we have many rescue places near here so thats a brilliant idea. Our local CPL are really really good actually so may be able to visit one of the fosterers too.

Re: Ragdoll - non allergy...

cats do vary a heck of a lot with how much they can cause a reaction

I am allergic to cats and although I reacted to all of mine as I first got them I am now fine with Indy and Loki (neutered short hair boys) and Gypsy-Rose (neutered semi long haired girl) but I still get itchy sore eyes around Mabel - a neutered short hair girl
