Homechecking in advance?

Hi

I am new to this forum and wanted to ask a question about rescue/rehoming...

I am hoping to get a cat or 2 in the near future and have been looking round at various centres.

As much as I would like a pedigree kitten, I can't ignore how many homeless chaps are around and will probably go down that route.

Is it possible to get a suitable organisation to do a homecheck so that when the time is right (or I see a furball of interest) it can happen quite quickly?

Thanks in advance

Re: Homechecking in advance?

It all happens pretty quick now Or you can sign up and have the homecheck and then just wait for the appropriate kitty/kitties to come along Many of them go in pairs now, from where they have been together and rescued from a horrible "home" or from where an owner has passed away etc. If I had my own house I'd happily go out and get another two!

Re: Homechecking in advance?

When I rescued my Timmy (rip) I reserved him on the Thursday, they did a homecheck on Saturday and I picked him up that same Saturday

I rescued my Frankie from the RSPCA about 4 years later and they didn't homecheck me, they said that as I'd rescued before they would check with the Blue Cross, which I thought was quite strange as my circumstances could have changed at home.

Well done for wanting to rehome a rescue and hope it all goes well for you.

Re: Homechecking in advance?

Thanks everyone - the fact it happens pretty quick is good news.

I was reading about 4 cats on the rescue thread and was saddened to think they may be split up, which led me to thinking that if only I had already been checked I could jump in and take all 4 !!

Even though every cat/kitten available for adoption looks lovely, there are a few that grab the eye and I have been trying not to focus on particular ones as didnt think things could be processed so quickly.

so maybe I CAN start looking and building my hopes up

Depending on the rescue and their location, some will take a vets reference instead of a home check. This happened when we got Abby as we were about 75 miles away from the rescue.

Also, a lot of rescues will home-check for each other if distance is involved, so if you have seen cats on the adoption page here, then there is an excellent network that could help you out if make a request to them....

Re: Homechecking in advance?

I've reserved 2 kittens from the spca (scottish version of rspca). They didn't do a home check though. I was surprised as I needed one when I adopted from the cats protection league. (Can't remember how long that took as it was years ago).

Hope you find a kitty soon

Re: Homechecking in advance?

First of well done for wanting to rescue a cat/kitten. Pedigree cats sadly come into rescue and I have been seeing an increasing amount of pedigree kittens coming into rescue as well sadly so do check out the pedigree cat rescues once you have done research on the breeds you are interested in. If you let me know where you are located then I post up rescues in your area to try, also if you like any breeds of cats then I can post rescues to try for those as well.
The time a home check gets done is dependent on how far away you are from the rescue and whether they have anyone in that area to home check or need to to find someone to do it. Most rescues will only check you once you see a cat/kitten you are interested in rather then home check you before you see a cat/kitten because of the risk of wasted time if you then decide to go elsewhere for a cat kitten.
Kittens are all very sweet but remember that a kitten isn't going to stay little for long and this is even more of the case if you decide to get a large breed of cat such as a maine coon or a ragdoll. Slightly older cats/kittens are just as nice and often get over looked so do spare a thought for them when deciding to adopt, however the cat/kitten has to be what you really want and you should never get one because you feel sorry for it because that kitten could be with you for the next 20 plus years.
