devastated for cat owner

tonight after getting back from a jog out with my boyfriend and back to my horses stables/field and doing the initial settling down and chatting, my boyfriend said 'look' and pointed over to the far hedge by the road. there was a cat stalking the hedge line within our field. now we have chickens so i can understand why this happend.. but i cant i said leave it its prob just after birds/mice it comes over alot and doesnt bother the hens... we had a walk over WITH MY DOG to see what it was up to and to move it on via my dog. he sent the dog on and i motioned to my dog 'there you silly dog' (my dog would not have mauled or hurt the cat my dog is a wuss and tiny) not thinking and letting the dog chase the cat away. off the cat went thru the hedge... into an oncoming truck. my bf looked at me and said 'that did not sound good' we looked thru the hedge and there the poor cat was. dead. i immediately looked at my bf with the look of dispare. we came out of our field and walked down. and there was the poor cat. i scooped him up and said to my bf 'dont ever do that again' tbh it was both our faults for not thinking but he wanted the cat away from the birds, i followed still not thinking. i slowed a car on its way up so i could asses, but the cat was gone. it was quick. i carefully scooped the cat up and lay him next to a house which i 'assume' is his owner. i am absoultley devastated for the cat owner i checked the cat over and it was a very old cat (no teeth/rotten (not due to impact) and was killed instantly. i have talked it thru with my bf and said what if my dog followed? stupid stupid idiots. my bf seems ok i think he has took it as an accident and moved on. i on the other hand feel ill. my chest is tight/hurts and im going to go and have a cry now he has gone. all i can see is that poor cat. and images of my dog being run over if he had of followed. what a stupid thing to do. poor poor cat and owner. i have left him as i said on a mown verge by what i think is the cats house. the owner.. oh the poor owner what a thing to come home to i cant talk to my parents as my dad lost his baby dog last week to a very bad epileptic fit. he found her in the yard. she was only 3yrs old, so they could do without this stupidity that resulted in a poor cat meeting its end. i am very sorry to the cat lovers here to read such a thing and shun me if you want. i just need to talk. my insides are like a hurricane.

Oh you poor thing. My heart goes out to you all. It was all a horrible accident, and I'm sure its not the only one thats happened like that in the world. The only consolation is that the cat died instantly, so no prolonged slow death which would have made the incident so much worse. Do hope you find some peace, and just know that these things do happen, so dont beat yourself up over it.

To come on here as a brand new post and that being your first one tells me you must be really quite upset and a bit mixed up over it.
Please do not beat yourself up over it.

Please can I suggest though that you knock on the doors of the houses in the area to try find the owner instead of leaving him/her there.

I agree with this post. I would definitely knock on the doors & try to find the owner, I'm sure they would rather you told them you found their cat dead (which is the truth after all) than come out & find it lying on the verge/hedge.

Re: devastated for cat owner

Please don't beat yourself up because you'll just make yourself feel worse. It was just a terrible accident. What is done is done but I do agree with the others that I would want to know what happened to my cat and to know that she didn't suffer. Knock on those doors at least for the peace of mind for the cat owner.

Hi, I agree with the others, please knock on the doors to see if you can find the owner and let them know what has happened.

And please don't beat yourself up about this.

Re: devastated for cat owner

thank you so much for the replys means alot. If i go and check tomoro and the cat has gone, do i still knock on doors and explain what happend to the owner upsetting them all over again? I will do this tomorrow, i just want to know if its the right thing to do? What if they are grief stricken and i turn up telling them how their beloved died. I dont know its so upsetting. Sorry my first post is so sad. I just needed advice and guidance. Again thanx.

Re: devastated for cat owner

Sorry to say, you were Irresponsible by bringing over your dog.
Why did you need to do that? Would it of not been better to have one of you hold the dog back and one of you go over to the cat?

The end result may of been the same, but the dog probably scared the poor cat quite a bit!!

And if you have Hens why don't you protect them better, if a cat can get through the Hedge, what of Foxes etc.

I know it was not intentional, but you were quite wrong.
You should at least make an effort to find the owner, instead of just dumping the body of somebodies pet on a wall, with Good Year through it!

Its not really a good thing to allow your dog to go after animals, be it on a leash or not. The responsible thing to do, would be to get the dog to heed and sit until commanded to do otherwise.
Had the dog chased or gone over of its own volition despite you commanding it not to then that's nature, but willingly walk it over towards the cat.... Sorry that's wrong.

Call me horrible etc, but you were wrong, and you need to hear that! Also an animal being old makes no odds, that's no justification.

Re: devastated for cat owner

^ totally agree. The hens and roo free range and an eye is kept on them. The cat was in our field. I know there is no excuse. I said it was old not to mean 'ahh well it doesnt matter' it was more of a 'poor old cat'. I know what you are saying is right and i accept responsibility. I said to my bf 'leave it' but he started walking and me + my dog followed. Irrisponsible yes.

Please don't blame yourself. You had no intention of this happening and accidents do happen. The above poster doesn't know how much you know cats and if your dog would scare it and you had no way of knowing that the cat would be hurt. You are NOT irresponsible just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think the post may have been to provoke an argument.

Chin up and I hope you find the owner.

Em xx
