Purdy's night time

Hi everyone, so i'v had my little purdy just over a week now, and we are all in love and verry attached she is such a sweetie. I have a question about night times though, she was using the litter tray brilliantly at first but we discovered yesterday that she has been using the corner of our carpet aswell It's all cleaned up and i'm in all day as i'm a stay at home mum so i can monitor her toilet antics, but through the night I was thinking of buying an extra large dog crate to put in the corner of the bedroom with an extra litter tray, blanket toys ect just while we sleep so i know that my carpets are safe till she's a bit older. Would it be cruel to do this? My thoughts were that she would still be able to see us etc so that would be a comfort to her, does anyone else do this with their kitten?

Re: Purdy's night time

Is it the corner of the carpet in your room she has been using? Is there usually a litter tray in there all the time or are you taking one from another room and putting it there?

Spencer will pee where a litter tray has been previously. I went to empty it or something once and he peed on the carpet where it goes.

Hello,. I have never used a crate for a kitten before, how many litter boxes do you have,i would have at least two,can you put a litter box in the place where she has been going on the carpet, one of my cats uses one litter tray for poos and the other for wees, maybe she is doing this ???? also does she have run of the house when your in bed, mine are shut down stairs in two rooms with their litter boxes.

Not cruel but IMO not very nice .Where does she sleep at night, does she have free access to other areas, how many trays do you have, where is her tray over night and where has she been weeing on the carpet.Sorry for the load of questions, but it will help to give you advice.

Re: Purdy's night time

Hi everyone, thanks for your replys, I couldnt find where my thread had gone till I spotted it this morning Im not very computer literate though Anyway, we have an enclosed litter tray in the dining room downstairs in a quiet corner and the wee on the carpet we found to be in the opposite corner of the same room, almost like she has been getting a bit confused about the correct corner. I know that the people who lived here before had 2 cats so im also wondering if she can smell them perhaps on this patch of carpet although we couldnt I also have an enclosed litter tray exactly the same as the other one upstairs in the main bathroom, the reason I chose to get enclosed ones is because I have a toddler who is into everything at the minute She wees and poos in both trays, has no issues with the flaps. We have open plan downstairs and the only door down there is in the lounge, where she has been weeing on the carpet in the dining room is the corner right next to the front door and there is a large radiator cover which juts out so no space to put another tray in that corner we would probably bump into it every time we came in the house. She was having full run of the house but we were finding nothing in either tray on a morning so I was panicking that she has been finding other areas to wee so for that reason I have temporarily shut her in the bathroom with her toys, food water and bed,ect for the past 2 nights and she used the tray on those nights but I do feel bad shutting her in the bathroom, even though it is a large room and she has all ahe needs in there I thought it would be kinder to have her in our room in the crate. Sorry for the long reply, Purdy is our first kitten and im so desperate to everything right and help her settle in but perhaps you all can see things that I could be doing differently to help x

Re: Purdy's night time

The fact that she is using her tray in the bathroom overnight is good. She obviously knows what to do.As long as it is not to cold in there it is better than being shut in a crate. It is possible that she is being attracted to previously soiled area's,have you cleaned them thoroughly with a specific cleaner like this Simple Solution Cat Stain & Odour Remover | Net Pet Shop Pets @ Home used to stock it but I cant find it on their web site. You can also try your own home made recipe Cat Urine: Clean & Remove Cat Urine in Carpet* FREE Recipe .After a few nights of success in the tray try her again with as many trays as you can accomodate for her over night,I personally would try an open litter tray until she becomes more reliable.I would restrict free access to the whole house at night, possibly either just your bedroom or similar. If there are places she keeps going back to scrub it well with the solution and try leaving a small dish of food over the spot, the idea being that cats will rarely toilet close to their food.I hope this is making some sense to you the more I re read it the less sense it is making to me.

Re: Purdy's night time

Hi buffie, thanku for all your advice I cleaned the carpet area with white vinegar, dried with my hair dryer then scrubbed in bicarb of soda then hoovered and finally sprayed on a lemon scented cleaner over the top, Purdy went and sniffed the area afterwards then ran away in disgust but i'm still keeping a close eye on her. I will buy some of the simple solution and spray some of that on the top also for good measure, it sounds really good. After reading your post i'v decided to scrap the crate idea and keep her in the bathroom for the next few nights then after that give her access to our bedroom and the bathroom to see if she automatically goes back to the litter tray and for my own peace of mind i'm going to put my old baby monitor in the bathroom which has a little camera built into it so I can watch her antics from bed I really like the idea of putting food over the soiled area also, I would never have thought of that so thankyou again and hopefully i'l be posting next time to say that the whole thing has been resolved

Good luck ,I have luckily never had toileting probs with any of my cats,so can only imagine what you are going through. It is something that does need to be sorted early so i hope you find that all this falls in to place. Please let us know how it goes
It might be a good idea to ghave a litter tray in the bedroom aswell as the bathroom when you decide to allow her access, just incase she needs to "go" quickly. Not sure how old she is but kittens often when they need to go ,they mean now,not leaving time to remember where the tray is
