Possibly a stupid question!?

Hi,
I've never ventured over to the cat forum before, so hello everyone!

I adore cats; my sister and her bf are getting a rescue kitten soon and I can't wait for a few sneaky cuddles!
But my question is... Are there any breeds of cat that have a different hair/fur to others? I Really want a cat in a few years, but I'm allergic to the hair, but I would prefer a non-naked cat- as cute and lovely as they are!
I was talking to a Maine coon 'breeder' a while back who told me hair allergies are less likely for that breed, but I'm not sure to what extent he was just trying to make a sale which would be Very upsetting- they would be my breed of choice...
I suppose it will likely be a case of finding breeders of different breeds nice enough to let me visit and see what happens, but if anyone here knows the answer it would be So appreciated!
Thanks

Re: Possibly a stupid question!?

I have a BSH and he has very thick fur (almost carpet like).

I'd try with various long haired breeds - particularly Siberian females. They haven't been proven to not cause allergies but anecdotal evidence abounds... Best of luck!

Re: Possibly a stupid question!?

I've nevr heard about Maine Coons from others but my first boyfriend 7 years ago was allergic to Sooty the mogmog but could hold Frankie the MC without too many symptoms. Siberians aren't anti-allergenic, but are considered hypo-allergenic i.e. less likely to cause symptoms than other breeds

Re: Possibly a stupid question!?

It's usually the salvia or dander that cause the allergy rather than the fur itself so you could still react to non hairy/bald cats, you could be fine and not react to the hairiest of cats yet get a really strong reaction from a short haired cat, the only way to tell is to spend time with cat and wait for the sneezes and itching.

Re: Possibly a stupid question!?

Someone posted the other day that long haired cats are less likely to cause allergies than short haired (something to do with differences in the saliva, I think). Personally, I haven't noticed any differences. I'm allergic to all cats

Re: Possibly a stupid question!?

We had 2 short haired moggies growing up one of them I was asolutely fine with but the other used to make me itch like crazy any time I held him (go figure). Since I have had Jaffe who is a Mine Coon I have had no reactions at all. I hae also heard that Siberians are hypo allergenic but would that is only what I have heard so take it with a pinch of salt. However, I was watching a programme not so long ago about loads of different cat breeds (cats 101) and I saw a story about a couple, they were desperate to get a cat but the husband had really bad allergies to them. I believe they did a lot of research and came across Norwegian Forrest Cats. They descided to get one and have found that he has little to no reaction to this cat what so ever. I'm not 100% of the reasons why but I think it was one to do with the saliva and that they have several coats. Dante may no more about them as I believe they have a Norwegian Forrest Cat? Maybe start with a bit of reasearch and talk to a few breeders and maybe go visit some of them and see how you get on. I wish you the best of luck as having a cat is wonderful!

Re: Possibly a stupid question!?

A lot of pedigree tend to be less allergic - my hubby is allergic to cats but not our pedigrees and lots of people come to my house expect to be sneezing a lot but find they aren't. I'd pick a breed you like the look of and would like and go and visit a breeder or two and see if your allergies flare up. That what we did. We have a Birman and a RagaMuffin and also had a Birman x Siberian and he was fine with all - but his sisters moggies! Well, he sneezes and wheezes.

Re: Possibly a stupid question!?

Hiya,

My husband really wanted a kitten but I was allergic. I finally gave in and we got 2 sisters, both short hair.

We bought a product called Petal Cleanse. It is completely natural and does not harm the cat in anyway. You rub it all over them once a week and it completely stopped my allergy! I was amazed. Eventually I seemed to build up a resistance and we don't have to use it anymore.
