Re: following my previous thread....
There is a very handy page that talks about intros and how to do them but not got the link to hand - hopefully someone else will. When I got my two they were in my spare room for a few days before letting Benny see them. We took him in on the lead and let him see them. Did this a few times and then stayed a little longer and allowed them to come to him when ready.
We then put a baby gate on the door so that Benny could go up the hall and see them and they could see him but he couldn't get to them. Then one day Skye decided to take the plunge and came out - got covered in slobber from Benny and they have been best buddies since. Spencer wasn't as confident and needed a little help from us. We took Benny in the room again and let them speak to each other and Benny gave Spencer a kiss, then we took Spencer through to the living room and he sat on one of our knees and then became more confident and started nosing about. He was soon going to Benny for head cuddles and now all 3 get on quite fab ![]() Benny hadn't had much to do with cats though apart from my neighbours which he saw when we went on a walk and spoke to, licked etc. I think you said in your other thread that your dog is quite used to cats and just ignored them? This is a good sign, especially when it comes to intros. Every intro is different though and only you will know when your dog and kitten are ready. Using the crate to put the kitten in after it has settled could be good, it allows the dog to see the kitten and vice versa but can't get to them but you could also use a gate too like I did. As for what you will need - litter tray, litter, same food that they are currently on, other food if you wish to change them on to better quality, scratching post, lots of toys (simple things like ping pong balls, rolled up tin foil etc can be fab), I would say a bed but most cats don't use them lots of cosy blankets, my two will definitely be up for a cuddle if you have a cosy blanket on your lap. A cat tree can be good but if the kitten is very young I'd look at getting a small one first as they can be very dangerous if they fall when little. Sure I've probably missed something obvious! |

Litter tray litter bowls mat Food (try to stick to what they have been used to to start with) bed blanket toys (balls... lots and lots of ping pong balls) Scratching post Non essentials More toys Water Fountain Catit Track Cardboard box (this will be free with a zooplus order )drinking straw (good for sore little teeth) Brush Foaming kitty shampoo(one gets rid of stinky kitteh smells but also hilarious " Alfie scowls at mummy slave and walks off") The list is endless and I'm sure lots of people will add to it ![]() |
