Unhappy At the end of my tether

I love my cat, we've been together since he was 10 weeks old, he's never caused me problems and had a mostly vet free life up until this year.....so really I can't grumble.

Towards the end of August Oscar peed on the sofa, he was going to the vets to check his levels for CRF, they had thankfully come down and he had no UTI. The vet thought it may be age related or that he was sleeping so deeply he didn't realise.

So we went home and carried on as normal....2 weeks later to the day, he'd peed on the sofa again, he'd used his litter tray overnight . Thankfully we have removable covers so off they came and into the washing machine along with the throw and his blanket. I have got puppy training pads between the throw and cushions and actually inside the cushions.

I came in last night to find that yet again he'd peed on the BOTH sofa's this time . The only pattern to this is its happening every 2/3 weeks, but he's using his litter tray as well.

I'm at a total loss as to why he is doing this, the sofas do not smell of wee and I would have thought if this was an age thing he would be having more frequent accidents.

He's bright, and eating for England at the moment. He's not frequently going to his litter tray and trying to pee without any results, when he does go there's no pink tinge or blood, he doen't seem to be in any discomfort.

I will be ringing the vet, but I'm at breaking point with it. I know its not his fault - the cat that is not the vet )

Sorry for long post, needed to vent

His appetite has increased a lot at the moment, he does look like he may have gained weight, but am not sure whether he has or its just his winter coat

Might be worth asking the vet about thyroid's, although I cant see how that would cause this problem, unless its becasue he is eating more sorry not much help we have the same sort of problem one of ours who does have urinary problems has done the same thing but on the dogs bed & there was nothing in his last sample to suggest why but he has'nt done it since so hopeing it was just a deep sleep thing.

Re: At the end of my tether

Thanks. He had a hyper-t test not so long ago and that came up negative. He does go through "hungry" phases, and I go with it because of the CRF.

I could accept the age or deep sleep theory if it happened more regularly, but given it seems to be every 2/3 weeks.....

Am due to go on holiday in 6 weeks and a friend is popping in to feed him, but I'm already stressing about him having an accident whilst we're away

It would be so much easier if he could talk

Only when they are ill though I can imagine the telling of tails this lot would be saying about each other

Hope you get him sorted x

Re: At the end of my tether

May be worth adding a second litter tray perhaps with a different litter - have they checked him to ensure he has no UTI?
Also when you go away invest in a feliway plug in diffuser (put it on a few days before you go as needs a few days to start to work).
Dally Banjo and Fluffed like this.

Good advice.

Also, if you're worried about the sofa while you're away, you could always cover it with old linen and/or towels.

Re: At the end of my tether

What are you cleaning the area he has been on? You may not be able to smell anything but he can detect the mildest trace so is going in the same place again.

Also it may be a mild UTI, one of my cats initially tested fine but after a couple of weeks the synmptoms returned & he did have a mild infection. Have you been able to get a urine sample to be tested?

Is there any way you can section him off from this area whilst unsupervised to see if you can break the habit?

That was also my first thought DB
